The final week before Christmas seemed determined to move as slowly as possible.
Perhaps because everyone could see the holidays waiting for them at the end of it.
Perhaps because the professors had collectively decided that no student should reach those holidays without suffering first.
Or perhaps, in Calli's case, because every passing day brought her closer to Nott Manor.
She tried not to think about that part.
Calli, Lucy and Stella were making their way back from lunch when the corridor ahead suddenly went quiet.
Calli didn't need to look to know why.
"Hem, hem."
Her jaw clenched.
"Oh, brilliant." Lucy muttered.
Dolores Umbridge came around the corner.
Pink cardigan.
Pink bow.
That horrible little smile.
Calli's fingers twitched.
Stella noticed immediately.
"Don't."
"I haven't done anything."
"Your hand is moving towards your wand."
Calli looked down.
It was.
She deliberately moved it away.
Umbridge spotted them.
"Miss Nott."
Calli forced her face into something resembling politeness.
"Professor."
Umbridge stopped directly in front of them.
Her eyes moved over Calli before settling on the Head Girl badge pinned to her robes.
"I do hope you've been reflecting on your recent behaviour."
Calli smiled.
Behind her back, Lucy grabbed the sleeve of Calli's robe.
"Extensively."
"I'm pleased to hear it."
Calli imagined turning Umbridge into a Flobberworm.
A particularly ugly Flobberworm.
"It would be such a shame," Umbridge continued, "for someone with your responsibilities to lose any more privileges because she cannot control that temper of hers."
Calli's smile tightened.
Stella's fingers closed around her other sleeve.
Apparently she now required two restraints.
"Definitely professor." Calli replied.
Umbridge's eyes narrowed.
For one glorious, terrible second, Calli considered it.
One hex.
A tiny one.
Something that wouldn't leave permanent damage.
Probably.
Stella pinched her arm.
Calli blinked.
Umbridge gave another sickening smile and continued down the corridor.
