Another Year Ends

Calli sat with a huge smile on her face during the end-of-year feast as the Great Hall gleamed in Slytherin colors. Long banners of green and silver hung from the enchanted ceiling, and behind the Hogwarts High Table a massive serpent banner curled proudly over the room.

Slytherin had done it again.

Seven years in a row.

Calli leaned back slightly in her chair at the Slytherin Table, satisfaction warming her chest. She had worked relentlessly all year for those points; answering questions in class, helping Lucy avoid detentions that would cost the house, even staying up late planning ways their trio could earn points wherever possible.

Winning the Quidditch Cup had certainly helped.

Across the table, Lucy Winterbourne was already halfway standing on the bench, cheering loudly while Stella Addington applauded more politely beside her.

"Seven years," Lucy said smugly, raising her goblet. "Imagine being another house."

Calli snorted.

"Tragic."

Lucy leaned closer, lowering her voice dramatically.

"You realize this means we're obviously responsible for maintaining the tradition now."

"You decided that five minutes ago." Stella replied dryly.

Lucy waved a dismissive hand.

"Yes, but it's already an established policy."

Calli laughed softly, shaking her head.

The word echoed faintly in the back of her mind, along with the memory of the notebook Lucy and Stella had given her at Christmas.

Captain.

She felt the same quiet warmth in her chest now as she had that night in the Slytherin common room.

Then the doors of the Great Hall swung open.

Conversation rippled instantly.

Harry Potter walked in slowly, head lowered, clearly wishing the entire hall would stop staring at him.

It didn't.

Calli frowned faintly as whispers spread through the hall like wildfire.

Everyone thought they knew what had happened between Harry and Quirinus Quirrell. The rumors had been growing more ridiculous by the day; dragons in corridors, secret duels, hidden treasure.

But Calli knew one thing most of them didn't.

She had heard the truth herself.

The memory made her glance briefly toward the staff table.
