The Aftermath

Callidora Nott stumbled into the Malfoy tent in a daze.

Her hair was tangled, jumper smeared with dirt, and blood from the cut on her arm had soaked through the sleeve.

Draco Malfoy looked up from where he stood beside Theo.

He gave a short, cold laugh.

"Serves you right." He muttered under his breath.

Theo didn't disagree.

Calli shot them both a glare, but she was too exhausted and too shaken to say anything back.

Before the argument could grow, Narcissa Malfoy turned sharply from where she had been packing.

Her pale eyes swept over Calli.

For a moment she looked utterly horrified.

"Good heavens, child!" She said sharply. "You look positively disheveled."

With a graceful flick of her wand, the dirt vanished from Calli's clothes. Another flick smoothed her hair back into place as though she had never run through the forest at all.

A second later Narcissa noticed the blood.

Her expression hardened.

Another precise movement of her wand sealed the cut on Calli's arm.

The bleeding stopped instantly, though a faint pale scar remained where the skin had split.

Narcissa inspected the result with cool satisfaction.

"Well." She said crisply, lowering her wand. "I'm certainly not returning Cantankerus Nott his daughter looking like some common street urchin."

Calli blinked, slightly startled. Of course it wasn't done out of the kindness in her heart.

"Thank you." She muttered quietly.

Narcissa only inclined her head.

"You may gather your things." She said. "We are leaving the campsite the moment Lucius returns."

Calli nodded and moved toward the small bedroom area to retrieve her bag.

Her thoughts felt tangled and heavy, like a knot she couldn't loosen.

The screams from the forest still echoed in her mind.

The panic.

The chaos.

The skull in the sky.

She forced the thought away.

When Calli followed everyone into the Malfoy Manor, ready to use their floo network to go to Nott Manor,  she froze.

Her father was already there.

Cantankerus Nott stood near the entrance. Lucius Malfoy, immediately greeted him, ushering him to his office, speaking rapidly in low voices.

Neither man acknowledged the children at all.

Not Draco.

Not Theodore.

And certainly not her.

The two men disappeared into his private study.

The door slammed shut behind them.

Calli stared at the closed door, her thoughts racing.

She couldn't make out a single word of what they were saying.
