This Is the Night

They did try to tone it down.

Slightly.

Only because Professor McGonagall swept past them with a look that could freeze fire, eyes lingering just long enough to make it very clear they were on thin ice.

Lucy immediately straightened.

George coughed.

Fred attempted something resembling respectable dancing.

Calli bit back a smile.

It lasted approximately thirty seconds.

After a few more songs, they broke off, breathless again.

Fred and George disappeared almost instantly.

"Where are they-" Lucy started.

"Bagman." Calli said simply.

When they came back, it was obvious it hadn't gone well.

Fred looked annoyed.

George looked like he was pretending not to be.

"He vanished." George muttered. "Just gone."

"Again." Fred added.

Lucy clapped her hands once.

"Dance now, worry later." She said firmly.

George looked at her.

Then grinned.

"Wise."

And just like that they were dragged back onto the dance floor.

A few songs later, though, even they had limits.

Lucy collapsed into her chair, fanning herself dramatically.

"I'm done."

George dropped into the seat beside her.

"Same."

Stella and her date followed, both looking far more composed but equally in need of a break.

Calli remained standing for a moment, breath warm, cheeks flushed.

"I need some fresh air." She said, lifting a hand to cool her face.

Fred was already beside her.

"Well then." He said, offering his arm with exaggerated formality. "Follow me, my lady."

They slipped out of the Great Hall, the noise fading behind them as they crossed the Entrance Hall and stepped outside.

The courtyard had been transformed.

Completely.

Fairy lights shimmered everywhere, coming from actual fairies, casting a soft glow over winding paths and tall rosebushes that formed something like a maze. Carved stone benches sat tucked between them, and somewhere nearby, water trickled, a fountain, hidden but present.

It felt quieter.

Almost separate from everything inside.

Calli shivered slightly, the cold biting through the thin fabric of her dress but she didn't mind.

If anything, she leaned a fraction closer, her arm still linked with Fred's.

He noticed.

Didn't comment.
