First Day Ends

"I can't believe she gave us this much homework. It's the first day." Stella exclaimed.

"If Sprout is like this, I can't even imagine Snape's class." Lucy groaned, making all of them groan with her.

Lucy was exceptionally bad at Potions, no matter how much Calli tried to tutor her.

"There, there, Lucy." Calli patted her friend's head.

"Stop that!" Lucy swatted at her hand.

"There's Miss Prefect!"

"Don't call me that."

"How about Con-"

Calli slapped a hand over Fred's mouth before he could finish.

"Don't you dare, Fred Weasley." She warned, narrowing her eyes at him. She was nearly as tall as he was, so they were practically nose to nose.

"What? What was he going to say?" George asked the girls, completely confused.

"Ew! Don't be gross." Calli quickly pulled her hand away when Fred licked it.

Fred and George burst out laughing.

"Yeah, laugh all you want, Weasley." Calli said, wiping her hand on his robes before she began walking toward the classroom. "You should know we just got out of Herbology."

Fred's laughter faltered.

"Who knows if I washed my hands after fertilizing the plants."

"Calli! You're joking, right?"

She glanced back at them and winked.

"Maybe. Maybe not."

Then she walked into the classroom.

When Calli entered, Professor Remus Lupin was already sitting at his desk. He looked a little tired, but he gave her a small smile as she approached the front.

"Hello, Professor Lupin." She greeted politely before taking her seat.

The bell rang and the rest of the class settled as Lupin stood.

"Hello, class. I'm Professor Lupin. This year we'll be covering how to handle a number of dark creatures and defensive spells. From what I understand, you haven't exactly had the most... consistent instruction the past few years."

"You can say that again." Lucy muttered under her breath.

Lupin heard her and chuckled, which surprised nearly everyone in the room.

"I can't even decide who was worse." Fred admitted lightly.

He and George were whispering about their first year teacher when Lupin added casually.

"Well, I can assure you all that I don't have Lord Voldemort on the back of my head."

Several students laughed immediately.

Calli smiled faintly as she pulled out parchment and began jotting down notes.

For once, it seemed like they might actually have a good Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

Especially with their O.W.L.s coming at the end of the year.

Calli continued writing as Lupin paced slowly in front of the class.

"This year will be particularly important for many of you." He said, glancing around the room. "Your O.W.L. examinations will determine which subjects you may continue next year."
