The library had become their unofficial headquarters.
Most evenings found the same five people occupying the same corner, books stacked in uneven towers around them while parchment slowly spread across the table.
Hermione had joined them that afternoon, though she looked far too pleased with herself for someone who claimed she'd only come to borrow a book.
"I've figured out how we're going to organise D.A. meetings." She announced.
Fred looked up from doodling a spectacularly unflattering portrait of Umbridge.
"Carrier pigeons?"
"No."
George looked hopeful.
"Exploding letters?"
"No."
Calli closed the book she'd been reading.
"Go on."
Hermione reached into her bag and placed a handful of fake Galleons onto the table.
"I've put a Protean Charm on them."
"The coins?" George asked.
Hermione nodded.
"The numbers around the edge will change whenever we change the one I've given Harry. So instead of trying to find everyone every time we arrange a meeting, everyone else's will update automatically with the time and date. The coins will grow hot when the date changes, so if you're carrying them in a pocket you'll be able to feel them."
Silence.
Fred blinked.
"...That's brilliant."
Lucy picked one up, turning it over curiously.
"Merlin, Hermione."
She looked between the coin and Hermione.
"You want to take my N.E.W.T. exams for me?"
Hermione immediately went pink.
"I don't think it's that clever."
"It absolutely is." Stella said, examining another coin.
Hermione smiled shyly.
"Simple, really." Hermione said, trying and failing to sound casual. "The idea came to me from-"
"The Dark Marks."
Calli's voice was quiet.
Hermione looked at her.
Then nodded once.
"Yes."
For a brief moment, the table fell silent.
Calli looked down at the fake Galleon in her hand.
A magical mark that changed to summon people.
One Lord Voldemort had burned permanently into his followers' skin.
Hermione had taken the same principle and turned it into something else instead.
A small smile tugged at Calli's lips.
"Better than branding our skin."
Fred looked between the two girls.
"You two say things that are occasionally quite terrifying."
"We try." Calli replied.
Hermione smiled.
"I thought coins would be less suspicious."
