Snake vs Eagle
The train finally slowed as the towers of Hogwarts Castle appeared through the winter mist.
Normally, the sight filled Calli with relief.
Today it felt strange.
Like returning somewhere familiar after something inside you had quietly changed.
The compartment door slid open and the students spilled out into the corridor, everyone grabbing bags and coats.
Lucy stretched dramatically.
"I cannot wait to get off this train."
George nodded.
"My legs have stopped working."
Stella stood and adjusted her books.
"We should head down before the carriages fill up."
Calli stood too, flexing her fingers carefully. The scar in her palm pulled faintly when she moved it. She kept the hand loosely curled, tucking it near her sleeve the way she had practiced all holiday.
No one outside their little group needed to see it.
Fred lingered a moment beside her while the others moved ahead.
He glanced down at her hand briefly.
Then back up.
"You alright?"
Calli gave him a small smile.
"Perfectly fine."
He didn't look convinced.
But before he could say anything else, Lucy's voice floated down the corridor.
"If you two lovebirds are finished having a moment, the rest of us would like to actually arrive at school this century."
Calli snorted.
Fred rolled his eyes.
They stepped off the train together into the cold Hogsmeade air.
The carriages rolled toward the castle, thestrals pulling them silently through the twilight.
Calli automatically glanced toward the nearest one.
The skeletal winged horse turned its head slightly as she approached.
For a moment she felt the strange quiet connection again.
Fred climbed into the carriage beside her.
Lucy and Stella piled in across from them, while George squeezed in last.
The carriage jolted forward.
Lucy immediately leaned forward.
"So." She said.
Calli already knew that tone.
"Yes?"
Lucy pointed at her.
"You still owe us a full explanation of how you contained a curse that isn't supposed to be containable."
George nodded.
"Technically speaking, it's extremely interesting."
Stella added gently.
"And extremely concerning."
Fred folded his arms.
"I vote we start with how your father thought that was acceptable."
Calli sighed and leaned her head back against the carriage.
