Dumbledore's Task

Calli's trunk was packed.

Everything folded.

Everything in its place.

Ready.

But she wasn't.

She sat on the edge of her bed, unmoving, her fingers absently twisting the emerald velvet hair tie around her wrist.

A gift from Cedric.

Her chest tightened.

She didn't want to leave.

A soft knock echoed through the dormitory.

Calli didn't move to answer it.

She simply waved her hand slightly and the door creaked open.

"Miss Nott."

Calli straightened immediately.

Albus Dumbledore stood in the doorway.

For a split second, she just stared.

Then she rose to her feet.

"Headmaster?" She said quietly.

"If I may have a word before you depart." He said, stepping inside.

Calli nodded.

"I understand..." He began, his gaze steady on her. "That you are aware, through Mr. Weasley, of what transpired that night."

The night Cedric died.

The words weren't said.

But they didn't need to be.

Calli nodded once.

Her fingers curled slightly at her sides.

Dumbledore studied her for a moment.

"What I am about to ask of you," He continued, "is not for the faint of heart."

Calli's chest tightened.

"Professor Snape has informed me of your... circumstances." He said carefully. "Your training. What may be expected of you."

Shock flickered across her face.

Her mouth parted but no words came.

"I know where your loyalties lie, Miss Nott." He said gently. "You need not fear on that account."

Something in her chest steadied.

"But," He went on, "I must ask that you do not reveal that truth when you return home."

Calli stilled.

Her stomach dropped.

"To those who would seek to use you," He continued, voice quieter now, "you must appear unchanged."

Her mind raced.

"I am asking you," Dumbledore said, "to be our eyes and ears."

The words landed heavily.

"To tell us what you can of Lord Voldemort. His movements. His intentions. Anything that may help us prepare."

Calli's breath caught.

This was real.

"If it is something you believe you can do," He added, "I would invite you to assist the Order of the Phoenix."

The name sent a flicker through her.

She had heard it before.
