Fertilizers and Other Important Topics
The next afternoon the corridor outside the Great Hall was packed with students moving between classes.
Calli, Lucy, and Stella had claimed a spot by one of the tall windows while Lucy complained loudly about homework.
"I swear Pomona Sprout thinks we don't have other classes." Lucy groaned, waving a roll of parchment. "Two essays and a plant diagram!"
"You're the one who asked how fertilizers affect growth." Stella said calmly.
"I didn't expect homework to come out of it."
Calli leaned against the stone wall, skimming through her notes.
"You asked a question in class. Professors love that."
Lucy pointed accusingly.
"That's because you do that."
Before Calli could answer, someone cleared their throat.
"Hi."
All three girls turned.
Standing there, looking slightly nervous but still confident, was Cedric Diggory.
Lucy's eyes immediately lit up like Christmas.
Stella quietly closed her book.
Calli blinked.
"Oh hi."
Cedric rubbed the back of his neck.
"I was just wondering if you understood what Sprout meant about the fertilizer ratios."
Lucy made a small choking noise.
Calli nodded thoughtfully.
"Oh, yeah. You just have to balance the dragon dung with the soil acidity or the roots burn."
Cedric smiled.
"Right. I thought so."
Lucy stared at him.
Stella raised an eyebrow.
Calli continued talking completely normally.
"If you want I can show you the diagram later. It's easier once you see the growth pattern."
Cedric brightened.
"That would be great actually."
Lucy was staring between them like she was watching a Quidditch match.
"So..." Cedric said, trying to sound casual. "Maybe we could go over it in the library later?"
Before Calli could answer,
"Oi!"
Two identical redheads appeared down the corridor.
Fred and George Weasley approached with matching grins.
Fred slowed when he noticed Cedric standing there.
"Hello, Diggory." Fred said pleasantly.
Too pleasantly.
Cedric nodded politely.
"Weasley."
George leaned against the wall beside Calli.
"What are we discussing then?"
"Fertilizer ratios." Calli answered immediately.
Lucy slapped a hand over her face.
Cedric tried not to laugh.
Fred blinked.
"Fertilizer."
