A Summer in Shadows
The moment Callidora Nott stepped through the doors of Nott Manor, she knew her summer would be miserable.
Her father was seething.
Cantankerus Nott stood rigidly in the entrance hall, tall and severe beneath the dim chandelier. His expression darkened the instant he turned towards her.
"You will explain yourself."
Calli barely had time to set down her trunk before the shouting began.
"You dare associate with blood traitors?" He snarled. "The Weasleys of all families! Do you have any idea what that does to the reputation of the House of Nott?"
Calli clenched her jaw.
Images flashed through her mind: loud laughter in the train compartment, the warm smile of Molly Weasley, Fred and George declaring she was stuck with them as friends forever.
She bit the inside of her cheek so hard she tasted blood.
Anything she said would only make things worse.
"And I will not have my daughter embarrassing this family." Cantankerus finished coldly. "You will remember where your loyalties lie."
Calli said nothing.
Silence was safer.
Three nights later, Calli was sitting at the small desk in her bedroom when something tapped lightly against the window.
She froze.
Tap.
Tap.
Calli crossed the room quickly and pushed the window open.
A scruffy brown owl hopped inside and dropped a letter onto the desk before flying away again.
Her heart skipped.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Fred's.
She tore it open.
Dear Calli,
Mum says we should write to our friends.
George says you should have written to us first.
Also George wants to know if your father has exploded yet.
-Fred
P.S. Mum hasn't actually said anything but Fred needed an excuse
-George
Calli laughed quietly for the first time since arriving home.
She grabbed a quill and wrote back immediately.
But the next morning her reply was gone from her desk.
The following week was worse.
Calli tried repeatedly to talk to her younger brother.
Theo had always been quiet, but now something about him felt different.
Colder.
More distant.
"Want to fly?" She asked one afternoon.
Theo shrugged.
"Maybe later."
Later never came.
Most of the time he stayed inside with their father.
The only time the house felt almost normal again was when the Malfoy family visited.
