The following afternoon, the five of them made their way towards the abandoned bathroom on the seventh floor.
George was animatedly explaining a new idea involving Skiving Snackboxes and something that sounded alarmingly explosive.
"And if we combine Canary Creams with Filibuster Fireworks-"
Calli caught Lucy's eye.
Just for a second.
It was enough.
Lucy slowed her pace.
"George."
"Hm?"
"You never actually explained the fireworks part."
George looked offended.
"I absolutely did."
"No, you skipped straight to the bit where someone catches fire."
"That was the important part."
"I'd like the less flammable version." Stella said with suspicious innocence.
George brightened immediately.
"Oh! Right."
He launched enthusiastically into another explanation.
As they rounded the next corner, Lucy casually caught his sleeve.
"Hang on a second."
George blinked.
"What?"
Stella smiled pleasantly.
"We're borrowing you."
"For scientific purposes." Lucy added.
George looked delighted.
"I do enjoy scientific purposes."
Fred glanced between them.
"You're all behaving oddly."
"We're really not." Lucy replied a touch too quickly.
"We're just very interested in experimental confectionery."
George nodded solemnly.
"Understandable."
Lucy gently steered him towards one of the nearby windows overlooking the grounds.
"Tell us everything."
George happily obliged.
Fred watched the three of them for a moment.
Then slowly turned to Calli.
She hesitated.
"Can we..." She nodded towards the bathroom only a few steps away. "Talk first?"
Fred didn't ask another question.
He simply reached for her hand.
"Of course."
Together, they walked the last few yards in silence.
Behind them, George's voice drifted down the corridor.
"...and then if the Canary Cream activates before the fireworks-"
Lucy gasped dramatically.
"No!"
"Yes!"
Stella laughed.
The sounds faded as Fred quietly pushed open the bathroom door, letting Calli step inside first.
Only when the door clicked shut behind them did he turn to her fully.
