As February quickly arrived, January's bitter cold had finally begun to loosen its grip on Hogwarts.

The snow that had blanketed the grounds for weeks turned to slush along the paths, rain streaked the castle windows more often than snow, and the air had become warmer in the thoroughly unpleasant way that left everyone's robes damp around the hems.

Everything else seemed to accelerate with it.

Homework multiplied.

N.E.W.T. professors apparently decided it was the perfect time to remind seventh-years that their examinations were approaching.

Head Girl duties continued stealing whatever free time Calli might otherwise have possessed.

The D.A. met whenever they could safely manage it, everyone improving with a determination that hadn't existed before Christmas.

And Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes seemed determined to consume whatever remained of Fred and George's waking hours.

Not that Calli minded that last one particularly.

Especially when Fred came looking for her one rainy afternoon with the unmistakable expression of someone carrying something explosive.

Calli stopped walking.

"Whatever you got there, don't."

Fred looked offended.

"I haven't even said anything."

He caught her hand and pulled her into an empty classroom before she could protest.

"Come on."

"Fred, we have Transfiguration in twenty minutes."

"Plenty of time."

"For what?"

He closed the door.

Then reached into his robes.

Calli instinctively took two steps backwards.

Fred stared at her.

"Your faith in me is touching."

"I've known you for seven years."

"Exactly. You should trust me completely."

"I do trust you."

She pointed towards his pocket.

"I don't trust whatever's in there."

Fred grinned.

"Fair."

He produced several tiny objects.

Calli leaned closer.

They looked like miniature fireworks.

Very miniature.

One was hardly larger than her thumbnail.

"Fred..."

"Prototype."

"Of?"

"Something brilliant."

"That's not reassuring."

"It should be."

He placed one on an empty desk and tapped it with his wand.

Nothing happened.

Calli waited.

Fred waited.

She raised an eyebrow.

"Brilliant."

"Give it a second."

A tiny spark erupted.
