Think Happy Thoughts

The classroom was quieter than usual.

Not sleepy quiet.

Nervous quiet.

Outside the tall windows, the sky was grey, and somewhere beyond the grounds the Dementors glided along the perimeter of Hogwarts.

Everyone knew they were there.

Everyone could feel them.

At the front of the room, Professor Remus Lupin stood beside the desk.

"The presence of the Dementors around Hogwarts..." He said calmly. "Means that you should all understand how to defend yourselves."

Lucy muttered under her breath.

"Fantastic. Nothing says safe like soul-sucking prison guards."

Callidora Nott smirked slightly.

Near the windows, Fred and George had already stopped pretending to take notes.

Lupin turned to the board and wrote two words.

EXPECTO PATRONUM

He stepped aside.

"This is the Patronus Charm."

Even the twins straightened a little.

"It is one of the most advanced defensive spells you will encounter in your education."

Stella Addington raised a hand.

"What exactly does it do?"

"It repels Dementors."

That silenced the room instantly.

Lupin folded his hands.

"A Patronus is a manifestation of positive magic, a shield created from your happiest memories."

Lucy frowned.

"That sounds suspiciously like emotional homework."

A few students laughed.

Lupin smiled slightly.

"The spell is difficult not because of the incantation, but because of the emotion required."

He raised his wand.

"Expecto Patronum."

Silver mist poured from his wand like liquid moonlight.

Gasps filled the room.

The light shimmered before slowly fading away.

"That," Lupin explained, "is the most basic form."

He looked around the room.

"With enough power and control, the Patronus can take a corporeal form."

George raised his hand immediately.
