The next morning, the drawing room felt colder than usual.
Calli stood still in the center of it, every instinct in her body telling her to be ready for something.
Her father stood by the window, hands clasped neatly behind his back.
Snape was already there.
Silent.
Always watching.
Calli kept her expression neutral, though her pulse hadn't slowed since she'd been called in.
This wasn't going to be good.
It never was.
"Before you begin your internship..." Her father started calmly, "There is a matter of importance to address."
Calli said nothing.
"You will need to master the Imperius Curse."
For a split second everything in her stopped.
Then she forced it back.
Every flicker of shock.
Every instinct to react.
Gone from her face.
But her heart... her heart was racing.
Loud.
Violent.
Why?
Why that?
Her mind spiraled despite her control.
Surely they wouldn't expect her to use it at the Ministry on someone.
The image hit her before she could stop it;
A wand raised.
A voice not her own.
Someone else moving because of her.
And then
Azkaban.
Cold.
Dark.
Final.
The door opened. The sharp sound snapped her out of it. Theo stepped in.
Expression blank.
Unbothered.
Like this was nothing.
Like she was the one overreacting.
"You will practice on Theo." Her father said simply.
Calli turned sharply.
"What?"
"You will try it on Theo."
Her breath caught.
She opened her mouth immediately.
"No!"
"Your brother has already agreed." Cantankerus cut in smoothly. "He understands the needs of our cause."
Theo didn't look at her.
Didn't react.
Just stood there.
Waiting.
Like this was expected.
Like this was normal.
Calli's jaw tightened.
Her eyes flicked; quick, instinctive to Snape.
Looking for something.
