By the third D.A. meeting, Calli had brought more than her wand, books and increasingly over-organised curriculum with her.

Hidden inside her charmed bag were four seemingly ordinary objects.

A brass button.

An old silver teaspoon.

A cracked glass vial.

And the small lantern she'd been experimenting on for days.

Each held varying amounts of her magic.

Or, at least, Calli thought they did.

She'd become better at feeling when an object accepted the charge instead of merely absorbing it for a few seconds before cracking, melting or becoming completely useless. The lantern had held its charge the longest so far. Nearly two days.

She still didn't entirely understand what she was creating.

That was why she'd brought them.

The Room of Requirement was one of the few places in Hogwarts where she could test things without worrying about someone wandering in unexpectedly. She wasn't about to experiment while thirty other students were around, but afterwards, once everyone had gone, she intended to stay behind.

So, while everyone was distracted getting ready, she quietly slipped the objects around the room.

The teaspoon went behind a row of defensive books.

The button beneath one of the cushions.

The vial behind a training dummy.

The lantern went into a shadowed alcove where nobody was likely to disturb it.

She wanted to know whether the magic would remain stable outside her immediate presence.

"Calli?"

She jumped.

Fred stood behind her.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing."

Fred looked towards the alcove.

Then at her.

Calli smiled.

He narrowed his eyes.

"Suspicious."

"Go practise."

"Bossy."

"Go."

He kissed her cheek before wandering away.

Calli waited until he'd joined George before checking that the lantern was completely hidden.

Later.

The room had descended into organised chaos once again.

Harry had everyone practising the Impediment Jinx in pairs while Calli moved between the younger students, correcting their wand movements.

"Smaller movement." She told Dennis Creevey. "You're practically throwing your entire shoulder into it."

Dennis tried again.

"Impedimenta!"

His partner stumbled backwards.

Dennis's face lit up.

"I did it!"

"You did."

Calli smiled.

"Again."

She continued through the room.

"Don't lock your elbow."
