The corridor outside the Transfiguration classroom was empty except for Callidora Nott.
She hovered near the door, clutching a thick library book to her chest. Inside, Professor McGonagall was marking essays, the scratching of her quill steady and precise.
Calli knocked.
"Enter."
Professor McGonagall looked up as Calli stepped in.
"Miss Nott. If this is about your last essay about Vanishing Spells, I have already deducted the points you attempted to argue for in the margins."
"It's not about the essay, Professor."
McGonagall raised one eyebrow. That was rarely a promising start.
Calli stepped forward and placed the heavy book on the desk. The title read:
Advanced Human Transfiguration: Animagus Theory.
The professor's quill stopped moving.
"Miss Nott." McGonagall said slowly. "That text is normally restricted to seventh year research."
"I know."
Silence filled the office.
McGonagall's gaze moved from the book to Calli.
"Animagus transfiguration is not unfamiliar material to you." She said mildly. "The theory is introduced in third year."
Calli nodded once.
"Yes, Professor."
"You attended that class."
"I did."
Another pause.
"And yet," McGonagall continued, voice neutral, "you are now consulting seventh year material."
Calli lifted her chin slightly.
"I didn't pay much attention to the subject at the time."
"No?"
McGonagall's tone carried the faintest edge of curiosity.
"And now you are interested."
"Yes."
McGonagall studied her for a long moment before setting her quill aside.
"I wanted to ask about the process." Calli said.
McGonagall leaned back in her chair.
Calli folded her hands behind her back.
"I'm studying."
McGonagall regarded her carefully.
There was something very deliberate about the girl standing in front of her.
