"I haven't known you for long but I can tell there is something up." Demi stated as she took a seat the table along with Joe the two of them sat next to one another.
"A-A boy came in today with what appeared to be abuse injuries," Joe breathed. "He was taken straight to surgery where my brother did everything he could."
"Did he survive?" Demi dared to ask relieved when Joe nodded his head.
"For now anyway, he's in a good place but he's very week in intensive care. I was Kevin's assistant while he did the surgery but I can't get over how hurt he looked even when he had been knocked out. I-I don't know if this is the job for me." Demi grabbed hold of his hands squeezing them gently to calm him down but he had already started to cry softly.
"Joe by what you've told me you've wanted this job for years, don't let something like this change your mind." Demi encouraged.
"I-I want it so much but I can't get the image of his face out my head, the extent of his injuries caused by his own father and uncle." Joe stammered.
"I'm sure all doctors think about their career choices when they go through something like this for the first time but don't let it stop you because there are so many up moments of the job like helping Nevaeh. Look how happy you made her." Demi encouraged Joe sighing nodding his head.
"T-Thanks." Joe breathed again smiling as she kissed his cheek.
"Your welcome, get your mind off it and go see Nevaeh, she wants help with a surprise for me," Joe raised his eyebrow making her laugh. "Don't ask me." Joe laughed too pecking her lips gently before entering the living room. Demi smiled standing up making a start on dinner for the three of them wanting to cheer Joe up for a bit.
When Demi peered into the living room she saw that Joe and Nevaeh weren't there instead there was a note on the couch. She raised her eyebrow picking it up reading over it rolling her eyes when it said they would be back by seven.
"I guess we're having a late dinner then." She spoke to herself entering the kitchen again switching the pan off which was boiling potatoes.
Joe and Nevaeh arrived back as promised five minutes before seven Joe carrying the tub in his hand so Nevaeh wouldn't drop it.
"Mommy it's us!" Nevaeh called following Joe into the kitchen where Demi had now continued to make dinner for the three of them about to plate up what she had made.
"You did not tell me it was your birthday!" Joe exclaimed Demi giggling slightly Joe rolling his eyes this time at her.
"Happy birthday mommy!" Nevaeh exclaimed giving her a big hug.
"Thank you princess." Demi cooed kissing her hair gently as she lifted her up in her arms watching as Joe set the tub on the side.
"Nevaeh wanted to do something special for you and we did," Joe begun gesturing her to lift the lid up. "Nevaeh made most the cake, I helped with the decoration."
"Mommy, mommy, do you like it?" Nevaeh questioned.
"I love it princess, thank you!" Demi exclaimed kissing her cheek. "I'm sure it will be yummy to eat after dinner."
"Now." Nevaeh demanded Demi giggling.
"No afterwards." Demi answered setting her down on the floor.
"Why don't we lay the table monkey?" Joe suggested Nevaeh nodding her head wiping away the pout from her lips taking hold of his head as they walked to the other end of the room.
