Chapter Fifty-Five

Katniss POV-

"Sir, the girl is in the car but before we can release her into your custody I need to check your home. Is it alright if my partner and I do a search of the entire house?" A police officer asks Peeta at the door.

"Sure. My wife is right here and so is our children so the house should be all yours but we do have a cat." Peeta says.

The officers smiles, "Thank you sir. Until we are through I would ask that you stay here with your family."

"Yes, sir." Peeta says respectively and comes over to us.

Willow climbs into Peeta's lap, she's scared to death-I can see it in her eyes.

"Why are those police in our house?" She whispers to him.

"They are just making sure that it's clean. Did you clean your room like Momma and I asked you to?" He asks her.

"Yes."

"Then there's nothing to be worried about." He assures her, kissing the top of her head.

I feel uneasy about it too but the officers seem nice and they're just doing their job but it's still nerve-wracking.

"Mr. Mellark, what room will Skyler be staying in?"

"The third room down." Peeta says.

"It's a nursery." The officer says.

"The third room on the left side of the hall."

"Oh, I found it. Thank you." The officer says.

They finish looking through the house and then they bring her in.

"I assume you know these nice people?" A caseworker says to Skyler.

She nods her head.

"I am leaving you with this cell phone. I do not want you playing on it. It's only for calls to be mad to me, the police and Mr. and Mrs. Mellark, alright?"

Skyler nods.

"I will coming to check on you in a few days." The lady tells her.

"Mr. Mellark, if you have any questions or trouble, please call us." The officer says, shaking his hand.

"I bet we will be just fine." Peeta nods.

The officers leave and we stand there awkwardly.

"Let's sit down." Peeta suggests, walking over to the couches.

Willow follows him and sits in his lap again, looking shy.

I walk over and Skyler follows me, sitting down next to me.

"Do you remember my daughter, Willow?" I say.

Skyler nods her head and smiles at Willow. She waves shyly and hides behind Peeta.

"And my husband Peeta." I say.

She smiles and nods her head.

"And this is someone that I know you've never met before." I say, scooping up an awake Rye into my arms.

He stretches out with a little yawn and looks at me.

"This is Rye." I say, turning him around to her.

"Oh my goodness. That is the cutest baby I have ever seen." Skyler finally speaks up.

I smile a little, "He's two weeks old today so it's kind of noisy at night but just ignore him. Peeta or I will tend to him." I say, patting his belly.
