I locked eyes with him across the room. The boy that hates my guts, and I don't know why. I took a sip out of the red solo cup in my hand and looked away. Everyone walked into the living room to watch my niece, Lily, open her birthday presents. She tore the red and blue wrapping paper and jumped with joy. Her small giggle made me smile. "Thank you Shawnie." My smiled dropped. I looked up and saw Shawn hugging her and smiling. I walked over to the box. Concert tickets to Taylor swift were in the box along with her new album. I looked at Shawn and he smirked. I rolled my eyes and pushed past him. I opened the screen door letting it slam behind me. I sat down on the porch swing. The door opened and Shawn's sister walked out with lily. They have been best friends for years, that's why Shawn is here. Shawn and I never got along, and we probably never will. "Thank you for the present." Lily said hugging me. "You're welcome." I said hugging her back. Lily and Aaliyah went to play in the yard.

"Y/N?" I turned my head and saw my sister. "Right here." I said. She sat down beside me and looked at me, "why are you out here?" She asked. I shrugged, "it's nice out." She raised her eyebrows. I sighed and said, "Shawn." She shook her head and laughed. "What?" I asked confused. "You let him get the best of you that's why he always aggravates you." She said. "I do not." I said. "Then why are you out here not socializing with anyone?" She asked. The screen door opened causing me to look up, "have you guys seen Aaliyah?" Shawn asked. "Yeah, she's playing with lily." I said. He nodded and walked down the concrete stairs. "You should talk to him. His mom said he could use someone right now." My sister said getting up from the swing. Before I could say anything else she walked inside. I sighed and shook my head.

Lily ran up to the porch and crouched down behind the swing. "What are you doing?" I asked laughing a little. "Shh, I'm hiding from Shawn." She whispered. "Follow me." I said quietly and got up from the swing. We ran behind a barn in the backyard. "Ready or not here I come!" I heard Shawn yell. I heard Shawn's boots crunch on dry leaves, I looked at lily and put my finger over my lip signaling for her to be quiet. "Boo!" I screamed and felt someone's hand grab my shoulder. They turned me around, and I saw Shawn laughing uncontrollably. My cheeks turned red, "Got ya." Shawn said once he stopped laughing. I rolled my eyes,"you do that a lot don't you?" Shawn asked. "Do what?" I asked confused. "You roll your eyes a lot." Shawn said. "Yeah, I roll my eyes at you a lot." I said walking away from him.

All of the family sat down around a plastic table, and waited for hamburgers and hotdogs. "Everybody eat." My uncle said. I wasn't hungry so I just stayed in my seat. "Are you going to eat anything?" I heard a familiar voice ask. I turned my head and saw Shawn standing there eating some chips. "Nah, I'm not hungry." I shrugged. "You haven't eaten anything." He sat down in the chair beside me causing me to tense up. "How do you know?" I asked raising an eyebrow. "I pay attention to things." He shrugged and got up from the metal chair.

"What was that about?" My sister asked sitting down beside me. "Nothing." I said and looked down at my hands. "Tell me." She said before taking a sip out of her red solo cup. "He just said that I should eat because I haven't eaten all day, and I asked him how he knew, and he just said he pays attention." I explained. "So he pays close attention to you." She smiled. "Whatever." I said rolling my eyes. I do that a lot.

We were all handed glass mason jars, and told to stand still. The sun was going down, and the air was filled with a sweet smell of honey suckles, a cool breeze sent shivers down my spine. A couple seconds later little lights popped up. Fireflies surrounded us. I had trouble getting mine in the jar, either they wouldn't stay or I wasn't fast enough. "Here let me help you." Shawn said catching a firefly in his hand. "Just put the lid on as soon as I put him in there." Shawn instructed. I nodded and opened the jar. He released the firefly in the jar, and I put the lid on it quickly. "Thanks." I said looking down at the jar. "No problem." He said. "Um, can we talk please?" He asked nervously and scratching the back on his neck. "Yeah, what's up?" I asked curiously. We ended up walking away from the crowd, and ended up in the barn. "I know we usually never get along, and I know that I can be an," he paused looking for he right word, but I interrupted, "ass." He laughed a little, "yeah, that. I want to start off new. Like a new beginning." I bit my lip and smiled, "Okay." His face lit up, "Really?" "Really." I said.
