Darius sat deep in thought. Was he making the right choice? He watched Storm cross the room. They had hated each other, but their fathers still arranged for their mating. It had worked out in the end. Their fathers had seen something they were both too stubborn to acknowledge. This was different. Jesse was a boy, and Daven wasn't gay.
He took a deep breath and sunk down into the mound of furs he had been sitting in for the past hour. Trevor had already broken the news to Jesse and was bugging him every day about whether or not it was a done deal. The sub always knew he'd have an arrangement mating. Daven thought he had a choice.
The retire alpha leaned around the corner. "Hello."
Storm turned to him from where she sat at the desk filing some paperwork. "Hello, Xavier. How was your trip?"
"Great." He stepped into the room. "Rose actually has some gifts for you and the boys. She asked me to send you her way."
"Did she bring me some of that fancy chocolate?"
Xavier nodded. "Too much if you ask me."
Storm clapped her hands. "I'll be back in a bit." She hurried from the room.
The old alpha wandered about before sitting down by his son.
Darius eyed the black and red werewolf. "You know."
Xavier grinned. "I know."
Propping up his head on his hand, Darius sighed. "And what would you have me do?"
"Call Daven in here and tell him he's getting a promotion."
Darius scoffed at the comment. "Yeah, and he'll be stuck having sex with a boy for the rest of his life. Do you even know your grandson?"
"Yes. He's like you. When I broke the news to you about Storm, you cursed and screamed and stomped around for weeks. When you two finally put your pride aside and realized that you were meant for each other, did you finally see I did what was best for you and the pack. Storm's birth pack has helped us through a lot."
"I get it." Darius stared at the wall. "I've had this speech before. I have to put the pack before myself, and now Daven needs to do the same."
"Well yes," Xavier nodded. "A brotherhood with Midfield isn't something that happens, ever. They have no formal ties to any pack outside the ones they run themselves."
"God, Dad, you and Trevor sure did have a nice long talk."
"He's getting worried you might reconsider. The man's in a tight place." Xavier folded his arms. "He's also offering up his son which from what I hear suffers from the same Midfield sensitivity issues as the others."
"He puked," stated Darius. "He threw up right at Daven's feet. Now I have to go tell him guess what that boy's going to be your mate. Good luck. Hope you get the vomiting thing figured out since procreation is required." He shook his head. "Thank god, same-sex couples just have to jerk off in a tube or the Midfield bloodline would be ending with Jesse."
They sat in silence for a moment. His father would sit there all day waiting for Darius to give in. Xavier had done it since the alpha was a pup, and it was pissing Darius off.
"Can you tell him?"
Xavier shook his head. "I'm not the alpha. I'm retired." He stood. "Arranged matings are hard. It's not fair. Everyone knows it not fair, but we're not humans, Darius. In our world, things can change quickly. Just look at Bloodhound. Their heir is dead, and one of the most powerful packs in the mountain range just fifteen or so years ago is crumbling. Dominants have to put the pack before themselves. You did it with Storm, and now Daven will have to do the same with Jesse. Protection Northern Ridge is your responsibility. You are the alpha."
