A new scent hangs in the air, teasing every sense of every creature with its intrigue. The universe begins to turn its attention to a moment more important than creation itself, a snapshot in time more precious than the first cry of newly born baby, than the discovery of a pearl.

A young boy, seemingly normal and innocent, a hand suddenly reaching over his mouth, dragging him to the side without warning. He doesn't even get the chance to let out a sound of surprise, before he's knocked out by the cloying smell of chloroform.

A deep voice chuckles, the vibrations  reverberating round the entire galaxy, and a tanned hand traces a razor sharp jawline with the gentle touch of a butterfly wing, follows the shape of sculpted lips like a blind man feeling for his lover's features.

The boy breathes in, exhales, and almond shaped eyes open to reveal warm brown irises, hidden by luscious eyelashes that flutter a few times like moth wings before adjusting to the harsh light of the room. His gaze falls upon a slender man standing over him, watching him with wonder in his eyes, and the corner of his mouth lifts upward in greeting.

The collision of two neutron stars, that's what they were, when they first met. A mega black whole that dragged everything towards it, from dark matter to light and life itself. It's been a long time since then, and they have changed beyond measure. But they are still colliding, still finding their way in this game of cat and mouse.

And nobody but them really knows which is the cat.

It could be the older male, golden, slender and powerful, a willow tree that bends and waves in the wind. One moment he is in the corner of the room, the next his fingers are curled round a throat, suffocating someone until they drop to the floor, lifeless. He is icy cold, but beautiful too, and they say that he has never ever allowed a target to live.

It could be the younger, pale and fresh faced, a hidden warrior seething just below the surface of his skin like a rumbling volcano. One second he is weak and helpless, the next he is snapping the spine in a single movement, a bottomless pit of endless flame set alight deep in his usually placid eyes. He is impossibly attractive, impossibly strong, and pure black fire flows through his veins in place of blood.

Nobody really understands how they work, what they do together, whether they are enemies or lovers. They are an enigma. They are the question of the existence of the soul, despite the fact that they both seem to have no emotion and no care for anyone.

Except for when it comes to each other.

In a sense, space is cold, vast and silent, until there is light and activity. It can be deadly, dark, terrifying, but it can also be the appearance of a starry night in summer, comforting and kind. But it is never one single thing at once. There is always a hidden warmth to every shard of ice, always a hidden frost in every burning star.

The stories say that they're partners in crime, and that they fight against each other like the sun and moon, night and day. The legends paint a picture of conflict, of anger and violence, of cheating and angry nights painted with blood, sweat and tears that never seem to stop. The tales tell of their constant rivalry, a dislike that goes back generations, a hatred that pumps through their bodies and fills them with adrenaline.

They couldn't be further from the truth.

"Hello there, baby," the younger male drawled, a slight smirk on his face. "I guess you couldn't wait until our next outing, could you? You just had to see me. Is that right?" The man that was standing rolled his eyes, despite the slight pink that dusted his cheeks, despite the fact that they were nose to nose, lips almost touching due to proximity alone.

"You're so arrogant," the deep voiced male returned sassily, a cold snap to his tone, and his boyfriend chuckled a little.
"You've told me before that it gets you going when I have a little bit of confidence, though," he returned calmly, hand lifting to frame his lover's face. "And I have never wanted to let you down."

"You never have," the elder responded, "you never could."

Their lips collided, a mutual movement forward that sets the cosmos moving again, allows the earth to spin on its axis again. Two neutron stars, still finding a way to fall further, an endless attraction that hadn't stopped since the world was born billions of years ago. Nothing changes when it came to them, nothing else mattered when they were here, together again after weeks, maybe even months, of pointless separation.

"Fuck, I've missed you," the younger breathed, lifting a hand to pull his lover onto his lap, still feeling a little groggy from being drugged earlier, fitting them back together hungrily, as if he hadn't eaten in days. His boyfriend nodded, curling into the embrace without complaint or rejection, responding to the kiss with an eagerness rivalling the other's.

He could never resist anything like that, could never hold himself back. It was just how he was.

But stars can fall away from each other too. The universe is constantly expanding, and that means that space is being pulled between them. A meeting like this is rare, so it is even more precious because of that. A solar eclipse wouldn't be important at all if it always happened, after all. This is the same sort of thing.

For a while, a few days, they flowed together like liquid water, merging into cold flame, a collage of gold and pearly white twisting together in a background of red and deep pink, the timbre of their voices blending into a harmony so perfect that it's hard to tell anymore who is who, and indeed that they were ever two entities instead of one.

But the elements are harsh, and they don't allow such miracles to happen for long. Soon enough, they were pulled apart again, dragged away from each other by the unavoidable forces that stretch the space time continuum constantly.

But it's never a permanent thing. They can't be apart for ever.

Even the universe isn't strong enough to do that.

It never could be.
