For forever

End of May or early June
This picture-perfect afternoon we shared

"Do you think we can hang out sometime?"
"Sure, my friends and I are going to-"
"I didn't mean it like that, Jungkook."
"Oh. Oh right. You mean like-"
"Yeah. We don't have to, forget I said anything, it doesn't matter."

"No," he says, his usually calm eyes glittering with an emotion I can't quite place. "I'm down. Next Friday? We can just go for a drive?"
"Y-Yeah," I mumble, suddenly feeling shy.

Drive the winding country road
Grab a scoop at À La Mode
And then we're there

"I didn't believe you could drive until just now," I admit, as he drives us down a particularly thin road, and he chuckles slightly.
"I might be younger than you, Taehyung, but I do know how to be more than a child. I can prove it, if you like?"

My eyes widen, and my face flushes instantly. He chuckles slightly, his hand drifting to the space between the two car seats. "I was thinking, do you want an icecream?"
"Oh my god, that would be amazing!" I say excitedly, reaching into my pocket to grab my wallet, only for his hand to stop my arm.
"Don't worry, I'll pay."

An open field that's framed with trees
We pick a spot and shoot the breeze
Like buddies do

"Ooh, this looks like a good place," I say eagerly, pointing to an abandoned farmer's field left to go fallow for the year. He nods in agreement, turning the car so that we drive down the dirt track a few metres, until he finds somewhere to park.

I reach over to the backseat, retrieving the box of warm chocolate doughnuts and the ice creams (which are in packaging, so they're not melting everywhere). "Good spot, Tae," he praises, beaming when I go red once more.

Quoting songs by our favourite bands
Telling jokes no one understands
Except us two
And we talk and take in the view

I sit down gingerly, on his coat, and he sits right there next to me, our shoulders brushing and my heart racing at the sheer proximity of the boy beside me. "I'm a little tired of this place," he comments, taking a doughnut and taking a bit out of it. "I really hope people change."

I smile slightly, recognising the song he's referencing. "I need time to replace what I gave away. My hopes are high, but I can't look too far. Think too high."

He giggles, suddenly breaking out into song. "Had to have high high hopes for a living," I chuckle, joining in. "Shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing!" He laughs again, shifting so that he's kneeling, emulating the action of firing some old fashioned firearm into the sky, following the lyrics. I just roll my eyes at him and his extra attitude.

All we see is sky for forever
We let the world pass by for forever

For a while, we just sit there, taking in the sight of nature, eating ice creams and doughnuts together, talking about nothing and everything at once. It's strangely comforting, being treated by him as just another person. At school, we can't be anything more than acquaintances. Here, we could be friends, or even something more if I'm lucky.

But I know that won't happen.

Feels like we could go on for forever this way
Two friends on a perfect day

"It's good, this," he says after a few minutes of comfortable silence.
"What?"
"I never got to actually talk to you properly. If you hadn't said anything, I would have missed out on this. And that would suck."
"Yeah, it would," I say quietly, my eyes drifting to his face.
