(a/n: next update will be on Christmas Day! I appreciate that some of you may not celebrate Christmas and I'm not trying to cast you out, that's not the plan here, I just wanna be all nice and give you guys some sort of present in my own little way. So have this extra, non-festive update to make up for that potential misunderstanding and also to make up for the day-late update that will come next week. As well as the undoubtedly cheesy message to readers that I'll do at the start or end, I haven't decided yet. Just like last year, basically.

There's a flash of red, and for a moment Taehyung's heart skips a beat, the colour serving as a single memory of the person he's supposed to meet in just a few minutes. But Jungkook wouldn't be early, he's a late person. He always has been. It's just part of his personality.

Taehyung learned that when Jungkook appeared at the restaurant ten minutes late on their first date, breathless and carrying a massive bouquet of purple flowers. (What breed of flowers? No idea. Pretty ones that aren't poisonous, that's all we care about.) He was desperately apologetic, thinking he'd ruined everything. There was a sense of panic in his rambling, how he'd not checked the traffic, and decided to get the flowers as an apology. And he didn't wanna text and drive, so he didn't say anything until now.

Taehyung just smiled, leaning forward and pressing soft lips against Jungkook's cheek, effectively silencing the younger male, who swiftly gained the complexion of a tomato. He can still remember what he said, something that shocks him even now. He's normally so shy, how could he possibly have come out with a response like that?

"Don't worry your pretty little head about it, you're here, that's what matters the most, right?"

Jungkook's eyes widened in surprise, and he sat down slowly, still holding out the (still unspecified) flowers to the silver haired male already sitting across from them. Taehyung took them gratefully, admiring them for a moment before focusing on the other living flower in the room - only this one was red, with stunning almond eyes and manners that hailed from some earlier time, some alternate universe where people actually had some sort of positive attitude toward others.

There was something special about him, even when they were still near-strangers. Something Yoongi had seen in him as well, as evident by the fact that he was so willing to say he trusted the younger. Of course there was something special about Taehyung for Jungkook - otherwise he wouldn't care so much about being late. Indeed, he'd never been so worried about being late before.

That alone was proof to him that Taehyung was different - he just didn't know how different yet.

That first date was the first of many. They got past the awkward first few minutes, where nobody knows how to really act, and then the giggles of relief after that when they didn't know how to break that awkwardness. There was no real switch from one atmosphere to the other. There was just a realisation that the world was beginning to make sense.

Almost as if they were always supposed to hang out like this, become closer as friends and closer as potential lovers.

They ordered basically the same thing, Jungkook wouldn't let Taehyung pay, and then they walked out into the night and kissed under the lampost (a proper kiss, with the fireworks and everything, all that jazz) in the middle of the street, before parting ways. Both with a tiny fire sparking in their hearts, fanned by that final look back into the darkness toward the other.

And they were still burning when they next saw each other, at an ice skating rink. But that fire wasn't hot enough to melt the plate of ice below them as they practically flew over it, Jungkook's hands around Taehyung's waist, fitting into place as if he was built to hold the older male in a more secure position than anyone had ever held him before.
