"Father...I'm going to be home late this afternoon."
"Oh." There's a disappointed hum of understanding. "Any reason for that, at all, Hyeri?" A slightly awkward silence. "Hyeri?" he asks again, his tone a little more serious this time. "What is going on?"
"Promise you won't get mad?" his daughter returns, sounding nervous.
"I promise-"
"And you won't tell Dad? He'll just get annoyed at me."
"Oh, honey, I'm sure he wouldn't get-"
"Promise?" Hyeri's voice seems almost desperate now, and so he sighs.
"Fine, I won't. Now, what's wrong?""I've got a detention......." the young girl admits quietly. Her father nods slowly, taking a moment to process the information.
"I'm guessing you got in trouble then?" he asks expectantly.
"Yeah."
"What about lunch time detentions, or-"
"I got an after school."Jeon Jungkook isn't a bad father, or at least not the worst father that could ever exist. He likes to think he's quite chill, quite caring, quite friendly with his children. Hyeri is a teenager now, in her last year of secondary school, sixteen years old and in that awkward little phase where some kids just act up all the time. But she's not that kind of teenager. She's normally much calmer, keeps her head down, doesn't ask for trouble.
So an after school detention, all of a sudden, one that she's worried about her other father finding out about?
This isn't normal for her.
And it makes her father, a young and relatively 'hip' guy, more than a little concerned, though he knows better than to interrogate her too harshly. There's got to be a good reason. There's always a good reason for something like this, with Hyeri.
"What happened, honey?" Jungkook settles on asking after a few seconds of consideration, trying to make himself sound calm instead of confused.
"So, you know how Miss Jones doesn't know how to be a functioning human being who accepts others as they are?"
"Oh god, what did she say?" Jungkook says expectantly, knowing exactly what's coming.Hyeri just sighs. "I was in her class, and we were talking about families because we're going to do an art project with the basic concept of family and love and stuff."
"Right," her father says, his tone encouraging her to continue.
"And I just happened to mention that I have two dads. I didn't think it was that much of a big deal, but then Yura started to get all in my face about it-""I can't stand Yura anyway," her father interrupts.
"Me neither," Hyeri admits, sighing again. "So I just tried to stay calm about it and simply told her that it was none of her business what my parents' relationship is like, because she wanted to know all the gross details.""Unnecessary," Jungkook comments simply, and his daughter laughs a little at the disgust in his voice at the description of events.
"Exactly. And then Miss Jones started - I'm getting annoyed again just thinking about it - she started to say that my attitude towards Yura's questions was rude, because I was irritated anyway and therefore being a little short with her because she wouldn't shut the f-""Hyeri, honey, watch your language."
"Sorry. I simply pointed out the importance of privacy, and that's when Miss Jones turned into ultimate bitch."
"Hyeri-"
"I know, I know, but you'll be angry too."
"Go on then, tell me what she said.""She said that my attitude was proof that gay couples were incapable of raising children properly, and she pretty much blamed you for me getting annoyed at someone trying to pry in on a life which wasn't 'right' anyway." Hyeri takes a deep breath. "And then - oh my god - and then she said that I had to try to base my art project on something other than my 'messed up family' and I kinda just lost it."
"Did you-"
"I stood up, walked over to Miss Jones and drew a rainbow on the board in permanent marker," Hyeri says simply. "And then I said, and I quote: 'Clearly your family was the messed up one if you can't learn to accept that people are going to allow themselves to be happy, Miss Jones.' Then I walked out of the classroom."
