"I told you it wouldn't work. You didn't believe me, but now you do." Her voice is smug, and it annoys me slightly how clever she is.
I roll my eyes, more than a little annoyed, leaning against her body as I slide onto the ground, the grass below me a useless cushion to the rock solid earth below. It's midsummer, and it hasn't rained for about two months. Everyone is stressed.
Me especially, after what just happened.
Put simply, my boyfriend of several weeks met the most important person in my life. And he simply could not take it in. He refused to accept it. Ran away. Broke off ties.
It was rather traumatic for us both.
"Shut up, it's meant to be," I retort uselessly. She blinks once, the action causing her eyelids to click as they move, touching her scales ever so lightly.
"If it was meant to be, he wouldn't have reacted in such a way," she returns, infuriatingly calmly, and I sigh, leaning my forearms on my knees."How else was he supposed to react?" I return quietly. "I mean, the knowledge of you pushes most people away. I'm honestly surprised he was so calm with it."
"I am a light in your life, Jeon Jungkook. Without me, you wouldn't be anywhere near as powerful or popular as you are."I nod. "I know, I know. I wouldn't want to imagine life without you. You're part of me now. But it just makes things a little more-"
"Complicated?" she finishes for me, and I sigh, running a hand through my hair and lifting myself to sit properly. "Look, I know I'm a mixed blessing. But you will find someone who accepts both of us. This I know."I raise an eyebrow at her. "You're certain?"
"Completely and utterly. You will. It is written in the stars."
"They gave me you," I say thoughtfully, glancing up at the powerful creature lying beside me. "I suppose I can trust them once more to make me even happier."She shuffles, her wings shifting slightly as her body moves. Her claws knead into the earth below them, turning hard ground into perfectly turned mud. "Flattery will get you nowhere, Kook. I will not forget that you chose to protect another over me."
I smile slightly, tilting my head and placing a hand on her side, feeling the warmth of the fire within her through the scales. "I highly doubt that," I return, chuckling a little when she hums deep in her throat in a half growl. "I know you better than you think. And anyway, that was one time. Before I understood everything."
She huffs, a long line of smoke curling from her nostril into the air. "You were a hatchling, I suppose I can forgive you," she says sourly, eyes flicking open as we hear someone approaching.
"Shit," I mumble to myself, standing up quickly, "what do I do?"
"Whatever you want. I'll support your decisions. Do you want me to disappear?" she offers, standing up and spreading her wings a little, the thin skin holding them together appearing to glow from my position underneath them. After only a moment of consideration, I shake my head. "No. I refuse to be ashamed of you. If anyone wants to know me, they need to know you as well. I'm tired of this constant hiding around. It's just unpleasant for both of us."
She lowers her head in understanding, and I sense her appreciation for my approach in her mind. I've hidden her existence and our connection for years now, and she's too big to conceal and too sassy to ignore now.
The trees around us rustle with the sound of an approaching person, and they curse under their breath, clearly not expecting to be so loud. The voice is surprisingly deep, and my sensitive hearing picks up on a very faint squealing. Almost as if-
