' ABO/Magic universe where heir to the throne, alpha Jungkook, finds out his mate to be Taehyung, a servant mage at a neighboring castle that he meets whilst visiting for a banquet of some kind. Taehyung pretends it never happened, as he thinks he is not worthy of Jungkook and that servants cannot associate with royalty in that way. But Jungkook doesn't let him slip, as he does not believe that love is discriminatory..  Idea (condensed a little but you get the point) from @GOGH-HYUNG, sounded amazing so.....let's do this!

I roll my eyes, slumping back in the carriage and running a hand through my hair. I'm tired of visiting different places in desperate attempts to find someone who matches well with me. I'm tired of having the responsibility and need to find my mate before I can even think about taking the throne. But I know that the other contender for the throne has already found his mate, and if I'm not careful he'll end up ruling our kingdom before I can even think about discovering where my own lives. Let alone who that person might be.

I don't want to be rude about a member of my own family, but he's not the sort of person that our kingdom would really benefit from. And sure, I wouldn't be a perfect king either, but at least I believe in the rights of my people and wish to add my own reforms that bring us forward instead of back to the Dark Ages. I like to think I'm a little less pretentious, though maybe that's just me being wishful.

"Right, we're going to meet Prince Jimin. Do you remember the details we gave to you about him? His interests, his appearance, everything?" my mother checks, glancing over at me and sighing when she sees that I'm barely awake. "Come on, Jungkook, you've gotta try and pay attention to what's going on. This is important."

I shake myself to full consciousness, sighing at the loss of sleep. "Sorry, this is just a really long journey, and we've done it so many times before. I guess I'm just bored of these visits. They never work. I won't find my mate anywhere, Mum, just face it. We might as well just hand the power over to-"

"I won't allow you to give up your chance yet, young man," my father interjects firmly, his eyes flashing red for a moment out of frustration. "I'm not that close to my death bed, thank you very much. It won't take that long to find your mate. We just have to have some patience, okay?"

I sigh again, leaning against the seat and nodding in defeat, turning my head away from both parents. I know I won't find them here. Just among the royal families. Soulmates or whatever they're called, whatever you want to label them as, they don't work like that. They never have. You can't just expect every single match to fit within specific guidelines, even if I know a lot of people hope that they will.

Whoever you get, you have to accept them for who they are and the life the world has given them. Doing anything else would just be wrong, morally speaking. I get that maybe I'm thinking of things too positively, but part of me doesn't really care. If I do end up finding my mate, then I'll be happy enough that they exist. Of course I'll want to know more about them, but their background doesn't dictate their whole personality.

Otherwise I would have turned out as a massive dickhead, when in reality I'm not as bad as some of the royal families I've met in my time.

But when we actually get into the kingdom, something in the air changes, and for a moment I sit up properly, eyes wide with surprise as I sense something different. Something I wasn't expecting. I don't know if it's my mate or if it's just something else, like a threat or anything like that. But I'm drawn to it like a moth to a flame.

My father glances over at me, raises an eyebrow. "You alright there, son?" I nod quickly, slumping back into the carriage seat as the world becomes normal again and I can't sense the difference as strongly anymore. It's still there, resonating in the back of my mind like a long sustained sound from a plucked string, moving at a frequency I can't quite understand but can't totally ignore.
