summary : in which yours and your ex best friend's prom dates decide to leave you both and instead set you two up together for prom.

"What are you saying?" You asked Mike, in pure disbelief of the words that just left his mouth.

There was a silence before he repeated the words, "I can't take you to prom."

"What! Why not?" You were shocked beyond words.

"Victoria's mom and my mom are friends so they want us to go together," mike's face had no hint of sympathy as he spoke in a monotone voice.

"Mike, prom is tomorrow night, why are you only telling my this now?"

It was true how were you going to find a date on such late notice.

"Victoria had to do this to her prom date too, you and him could go together," he tried to suggest.

"Who's her date?" You asked.

He made an unsure face and shrugged, "honestly I don't know, but I'm sure he'll be a great date," he pat your shoulder softly while getting up.

"I need to go talk to Victoria," he turned on his heel before turning around to simply say, "I'm sorry."

Mike was the most popular guy in school, quarterback of the football team, star of the basketball team and damn was he attractive.

You had been pining over him for a while and to hear him suddenly drop you to be Victoria's date hurt.

Victoria is your typical high school queen bee. She looks photo ready every day, has the love of every boy at school and the jealousy of every girl.

It didn't surprise you to see them end up going to prom together.

It was like seeing Barbie and Ken.

It was now the day of prom and you were sitting in your royal blue gown with a sad frown resting on your face.

"Cheer up honey, you're gonna have a great time, with or without a date. You look beautiful, don't let one guy ruin your night. Who knows another guy may make your night," your mom smiled with encouraging words.

"Come on let me take some photos."

After about a million photos later you were on your way to the venue.

Looking out the window you were almost so distracted that you didn't hear the ping of your phone.

It was a text message from mike.

"I'm still serious about Victoria's date, you guys should go together, I spoke to him about you and he said he'll meet you at the front of the banquet hall at 7:30 ;)"

You rolled your eyes still upset at him not being your date but you also couldn't help but wonder who this mysterious guy was.

Did you know him? Was he cute? Was he weird?

Your mom pulled up to the venue and it was 7:23 p.m.

After waving goodbye to your mom you messaged mike to let him know you were at the front of the venue.

"I'll come outside with him" he wrote back and you were now standing there anxious and nervous.

After what felt like ten minutes you felt a tap on your shoulder.

"Hey (Y/N)," mike spoke and before he had the chance to introduce your new date you said the name.

"Grayson?"

"(Y/N)?"

You were both equally shocked and confused.

"Good, you two know each other I need to go, Victoria is probably wondering where I am, you two have fun," He finished before running back inside.

You stood there, mouth slightly agape as you gazed into the eyes of the man who used to be your best friend.

It's been about three months since you both last spoke but seeing him here right now made it feel like just yesterday.

"You look beautiful," he whispered trying to break the ice.

"You look beautiful too," you spoke without thinking. "No sorry I don't mean beautiful I mean you are beautiful but-" you stopped yourself before letting go of the breath you were holding in.

"You look good," you sighed lowering your gaze to his feet.

"Wanna go inside?" He asked.

You simply nodded and followed him in.

An hour passed of awkward silence while you both ate your dinner. The silence was getting worse by the minute and you couldn't take it anymore.

"Can I talk to you outside?" You asked over the music.

He nodded with a hint of fear of what you were to say.

You both made your way to the garden outside. There were many rose bushes and flowers covering the ground and at center was a big water fountain.

Fairy lights were strung up on the trees and it seemed like something out of a movie.

You sat on the cement bench and so did Grayson.

You turned facing him and spoke.

"I can't sit in there with you and pretend that we're buddy buddy's when in reality we're not. Grayson I need to know what happened to us. Why you cut me off. Why you left me wondering what it was that I did for three months," your voice cracked as tears began to prick at your eyes.

"No no please don't cry," he wiped the single tear that snuck out.

"It's complicated," he said softly, avoiding eye contact with you.

"Grayson I deserve to know, we were best friends."

"That was the thing. We were best friends, but I never wanted to be just your friend. I always wanted to be something more and I thought I it'd be best to avoid you then to confront my feelings and have my heart broken," He was ashamed.

Grayson couldn't find it in him to look you in the eyes and to see the disappointment.

"Grayson," you whispered grabbing his cheek to make him look at you.

"Who said I would've rejected you?" His eyes sparkled upon hearing those words.

"Grayson I was in love with you, always and I still am but for you to cut me out of your life like that, it hurt gray. I felt the same way and I still feel that way, I just wish you didn't feel like ignoring me was your best option," you sighed looking down.

"No please, none of this was ever your fault. I was a coward but if you'll give me another chance I won't be a coward, please give me one more chance," the love in his eyes was all you saw and you knew you had to say yes.

Thank god for this prom mix and match, even though things got mixed you found your match.
