Jack

One of the things I adored most about Brooklyn was his capacity to buy trinkets. He'd been collecting them even before I had met him, simply because they held so much value to him. He bought one in every place we had ever gone to, and I make sure that I helped in any way I could.

If I went somewhere and Brook wasn't with me, I'd pick him up the most abstract thing I could find, taking the time to learn its history so I could relay it to him. His eyes would be wide, head nodding, focussed, as he took all the information in.

The boys didn't care much for his obsession, his passion, although they did put up with it. Next to me, Mikey was the most interested, willing to listen to Brooklyn when he talked about them all the time.

Brooklyn refused to leave any destination without purchasing one thing, and eventually it became a kind of game; to find the best thing for Brooklyn to purchase. Or, the five of us would buy a thing each, and then Brooklyn would come home with five trinkets from that particular day; only he wouldn't buy them until he had learnt their history off by heart. But he always did, and that's what endeared him to me the most.

They all called his huge collection of trinkets 'meaningless junk' (but only in a joking manner), which I knew upset him, but at the same time he ignored them. But whenever he did get upset, I took him into his room and stopped him in front of his trinket drawer. I'd open it, take one out at random, and ask him to tell me the story behind it. We'd then be there for hours, or as long as he needed to calm down.

He knew the story behind every single trinket he owned, and would spend all the time in the world making sure I knew every single one too; those were my favourite times. When Brook would get lost in his explanation, his eyes would light up as he spoke, so much passion running through his voice. Just as I knew it did when he sung.

And I always watched with a fond smile, running my hand up and down my boyfriends side as he did so.

I picked out a brooch, of what looked like a leaf. It was slightly chipped on one of the edges, but I knew Brook didn't care. It was the history he cared about, and plus "That means it has personality, right?"
That's what Brooklyn said every time something caught his eye.

"What's the story behind this one Brooky?" I asked, dropping it into his open palm.

He turned it over a few times, running his fingers over it. He smiled, kissing my cheek.

"It's an oak leaf Jack." He said, staring at me expectantly, with those big, green, innocent eyes of his.

I laughed, and pulled a face. "And?"

He just rolled his eyes and dragged me over to his bed, the two of us sitting down. The brooch was still in his grasp.

"The oak leaf is a Celtic symbol for strength and wisdom. And the oak tree itself was seen as a 'cosmic storehouse of wisdom'"

"Big words from you Brook." I pointed out with a fond smile, resting my head on his shoulder.

"Well, they aren't my words; they're the words of the lady I bought it from." He said, nudging me slightly.

"Anyway, the Ancient Celts observed the oaks huge growth, and it's expanse across the land, and so they took this as a sign that the oak was to be honoured for its endurance, strength, and noble presence."

"And then what?" I asked, stroking his side lightly. I would never got used to his voice when he explained these things to me. Never.

"Nothing. The Celts just honoured the oak leaf, and that's why it's on brooches, pins, necklaces... literally everywhere. But the lady I bought this from made it herself years ago, out of gold and bronze, I think? But yeah, this is one of my favourites... so trust you to pick it out of all of them."

Brooklyn ended with a chuckle. He made to get up so I let go of him, and as quick as he could he put it back into the drawer, shut it, and laid down beside me.

"Thanks Jackie, I love you" He murmured. I kissed his head in response, already feeling my eyes slip shut.
