Rye

With Robbie on holiday, all of the editing was chucked at Alex, however we all pitched in as much as we could, when we could. It had been constant filming and editing for the last week or so, just to try to get footage to compile later on.

I felt my phone buzz in my pocket, and I silently sighed in relief that I'd put it on silent. I knew that none of us would like to re-film this video, and at such a crucial moment.

It vibrated against my leg for what seemed like an eternity and then it suddenly shut off. We carried on filming, but I got an odd look from Jack when it started to vibrate again; he was sat flush against my leg, so of course he would feel it.

"Do you need to get that?" He muttered without his lips moving. I subtly shook my head no, and that was that.

My phone buzzed occasionally after that, the person trying to get a hold of me texting me. It was then that I thought that something could be wrong; maybe I should've picked up the phone earlier.

But we'd finished filming an hour later, and the second the camera shut off I slide my hand into my pocket, retrieving my phone.

"Who was it?" Jack asked, resting his head on my shoulder.

"Dad... I'm gonna take this outside."

I jumped up and walked out, reading through the six texts he'd sent me after the two missed calls.

Are you there?

Rye?

When you get this call me back as soon as you can.

It's important.

Rye?

Just call me when you get this.

I frowned. That wasn't like my dad. I called him back when I sat on the step outside the back door, biting my lip.

I couldn't help but think that something was wrong.

"Rye?"

My dad answered within seconds, but there was something wrong with his voice. It sounded hoarse, weak, and it shook something awful.

"Dad?" I asked quietly, gripping my knee with my hand tightly.

"Rye, you... your mum, she..." He broke off, and I heard him stifle a sob.

"What? She's what?" I asked. My voice cracked. "Dad... what happened to mum?"
My knees started to bounce up and down in anticipation.

"She... she's gone Rye." He said quietly.

My knees stilled instantly, and I froze.

"What?" I whispered.

For some reason I didn't cry. I was in too much shock, and my brain didn't register what he said.

"She was in a car accident Rye, and she... she didn't make it..." And then my dad broke down over the phone. Huge wracking sobs filled my ears, and I swallowed sharply.

"Dad... dad!" I said, and sniffed once.

That was it. I didn't do anything except listen to my father's broken cries. For his wife. For his best friend. For my mother.

And then I couldn't listen anymore. I hung up with a whisper, but I don't think I made any words.

I clutched my phone tightly, and my brain tried to process what had just happened.
