Just a warning... this isn't like my other Oneshots. It's set in a war setting, and so again, will contain some upsetting/violent scenes.

"This place is clear... move onto the next place." I ordered quietly, making hand gestures.

They nodded at me once, and trickled onto the bullet riddled street in formation.

The place was deserted, tremendous crossfire having taken place there days before, those living in the homes having fled. Some had been gunned down, and caught in the crossfire.

And as much as I had wanted to save them, there had been nothing we could do.

I'd been given specific orders to scout ahead, and so as the Lieutenant of my platoon of thirty soldiers, they all followed me. I got given orders, and I spread those orders to my men.

We had no idea if the enemy was still in the vicinity, but it was my job to check.

"Clear, Lieutenant!" One of my shoulders called from the front, and I made my way to the front, gun at the ready, tense.
You never knew when you had to shoot, or when you had to take cover.

"Okay Davies... we'll split up. You go left at the fork, and I'll go right. And for Gods sake try not to get killed." I said.

"See you on the other side."

I watched fifteen of my men move through building after building, taking it slow. I nodded in approval. Davies would become a Lieutenant soon, I knew.

"Let's go." I said, making another signal with my hands.

One at a time we searched building after building, keeping low and quiet. I held my breath as we passed bodies on the floor. We couldn't bury them; that would only alert the enemy to our movements.

But as we scoped out the fourth building I heard something.

I made a gesture with my hands and all my soldiers sank to the floor behind cover.

"What is it?" Jackson whispered.

I held my finger to his lips, giving him a terse look. He immediately fell silent.

I crawled a short distance away from my men and observed the area around me. I observed it through the scope of my gun, searching everything I could see.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Then what on earth had that noise been?

I shook myself, shivered. There was nothing there, but I had a bad feeling.

"Okay, move onwards, but stay low. Stay alert. Have eyes on each other at all times."

They all nodded.

Our movements after that were compact. More orderly. More careful. We took twice as long to scout, but I didn't care.

I wanted to leave with my men alive and well.

There was a massive hall in front of us, one that I remembered hosted all sorts of activities.
The skylight had been blown open. Massive holes in the floor, in the walls. Completely destroyed. Riddled with bullets.

I led the way in, checking it alone, before gesturing for the others to follow me.

I was still on edge. I scoped out the terrain from every angle, and still nothing. Everything was still, but that didn't settle my nerves. If anything, it put me even more on edge.
