Jack

"Ow. Shit," I muttered beneath my breath when I missed the pepper and cut my finger instead.

Right away I saw blood cover my finger, and I cursed again. I squeezed it tight, ignored the ripples of pain that shot up from my hand.

"Everything alright?" Rye lifted his head from the book he was reading on the sofa.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Just cut my finger is all," I hissed, held my finger under the tap for a while to clean it. Drain the blood away.

"How badly?"

"It's only a small cut. It'll stop bleeding in a minute or so," I said.

But it didn't, unfortunately. It didn't stop bleeding after two minutes, and the blood flow didn't stop, or start to slow down. If anything it kept up with the same velocity, and I stumbled back a step when a wave of dizziness overcome me.

"How's the bleeding doing Jackie?" Rye called, piercing through the fog in my head.

I breathed heavily, and panicked, because... shouldn't it have stopped bleeding by now?

Rye suddenly appeared beside me, and I stared at him with wide eyes. In shock.

I knew that something wasn't right. There was too much blood, especially for a small cut like it was.

From Rye's face, I could tell that he was having the same thoughts.

I let him add pressure to my finger, too preoccupied with watching the red water flow down the sink.

"You're very pale... I'm taking you in to the hospital. No arguments," Rye said, and I didn't fight.

I nodded in agreement, hissed when Rye moved my hand out of the sink. Immediately blood welled to the surface again, dripped down the length of my finger. I breathed heavily.

Rye reached into the drawer and retrieved a tea towel, and proceeded to wrap it tightly around my finger. I whimpered once, bit my lip.

"You'll be fine Jack, I promise," Rye smiled at me.

I nodded, closed my eyes for a few seconds.

"Right, let's go."

I walked beside Rye to the car, leant my head back on the headrest once I was sat inside. I could feel Rye occasionally glancing my way throughout the drive, but I didn't really pay attention.

I was more engrossed in the fact that my head felt light and fluffy. I couldn't really see that well, my vision having gone blurry.

With blurred vision I lifted my hand to eye-level, let out a noise when I saw the tea towel was nearly dripping with blood.

"Rye?" I inhaled loudly.

"Shit... we're nearly there Jackie. Stay awake," he said loudly but calmly.

I nodded, but that was a mistake. All the blood rushed to my head, and then not, and I couldn't see. Everything went white, and I felt my head fall back onto the headrest.

And then the car stopped, and the door on my side opened.

"Come on Jackie, you'll be fine once we get inside," he said, shook my shoulder.

I blinked twice, struggled to get out of the car. Rye wrapped an arm around my waist and helped me walk. My feet dragged on the floor, despite my attempts at trying to help.

"Head up Jackie!" Rye ordered.

My head snapped up, and then lolled back down against my chest.

"Help! He's bleeding and he needs help!" I heard Rye yell.

We'd stopped moving for the time being, and I managed to keep my eyes open, Rye's arm tightening around my waist when I slipped slightly.

"You can fill out this form, and a doctor will be with you shortly. If you just wait in the chairs over there," the receptionist pointed to the waiting area; filled with people.

I let my head drop when my vision went white for the second time. My breath turned laboured and I felt my body sink lower to the floor.

"Look at him! He's nearly passed out twice... he needs urgent care now!" Rye shouted. "His finger's been bleeding for thirty minutes and it isn't slowing down!"

"I'm sorry, but you're going to have to wait. There are other patients before your friend-"

But I didn't get to hear the rest of what the lady said.

Because I passed out.

I remembered swaying heavily, despite Rye holding me up. I remembered Rye calling my name. I remembered falling, but two arms caught me before I hit the floor. I remembered breathing heavily twice, then three times. Hands on my body.

And then no more.

When I woke up hours later, I had a God-awful headache.

I groaned when I opened my eyes, saw Rye on his phone, sat in a chair beside my bed.

I groaned out again, lifted my hand to my head, and Rye looked up.

Seeing that I was awake, he leant forward, relieved smile on his face.

"You have no idea how good it is to see you awake," he ruffled my hair, and I slapped his hand away with a smile.

"Ow, what happened?" I moaned, let my body fall back onto the bed when my head started to hurt.

"You passed out in the reception area from blood loss."

"But I cut my finger... I don't understand why it bled so much," I said, observed my bandaged finger curiously.

I flushed in embarrassment.

I'd passed out? Christ.

"The doctor told me you have something called Haemophilia? I think it was called? Basically, long story short, it's a genetic disorder that doesn't let your body make blood clots. And that's why you finger didn't stop bleeding... it couldn't stop bleeding because your body wasn't making blood clots," Rye explained.

I sighed. "Great. Jack Duff. Cause of death: paper cut."

Rye laughed heartily at my joke, and I smiled with one eye opened.

"No, we just have to be more careful. Not let you do any of your ridiculous ideas and stunts."

"Excuse me? I think you'll find that it's you that instigates it all!" I protest, sitting up on my elbows.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Rye winked.

I thanked Rye in the car ride home three hours later, my stay in the hospital totalling at around six hours.

"Thanks for taking me to the hospital Rye," I said quietly.

Rye just smiled and ruffled my hair, to which I groaned when he messed it up again, before putting his hand back on the wheel.

"It's fine. I'm always going to look out for my little brother."

Rye chuckled when I faked a gag.
