Jack

I waited until Brooklyn was completely passed out beside me before I even thought of moving.

The whole time I was waiting, I traced comforting circles over Brook's arms with my fingers, knowing that it would send him to sleep quicker. He had burst into tears after about twenty minutes of watching the video, and I pulled him into my side, smiling sadly as he buried his face in my jumper, his hands trembling. He had stayed like that until he had fallen asleep, and I was silently cursing the boys while I comforted him.

I couldn't believe they would treat Brook this way... There was absolutely no excuse. None!

As gently as I could I slipped from my bed, proceeded to cover Brooklyn with my blanket. I watched with a smile playing on my lips as he curled up, twisting his hands into the soft fabric. He looked innocent then, completely unburdened by the world.

What I wouldn't give to have my friend be like this all the time... What I wouldn't give to ensure his happiness.

I walked quietly into the Mindy room, simply so that they wouldn't be able to hear me. I wanted to surprise them, just like they had done with their verbal abuse towards Brook.

I could feel the tension in the air already, seeing Andy's tense shoulders, Rye's general pissed expression.
Mikey was a different matter altogether though. He looked deep in thought, not angry at all. If I was honest, I thought he was guilty of something.

Good, I thought with a scowl.
Yet it seemed that Mikey would be the only I would get through to at the moment. And if I did, maybe he could help me wear Andy and Rye down.

I pulled my phone from my pocket, muted it, and fired off a text to Mikey, hiding behind the door.

We need to talk.

"If it's Brook ignore him." Andy said.

I was all but ready to hit him, but I held myself back, knowing that it wouldn't make this any better.

Mikey didn't reply. A few seconds my phone buzzed inaudibly in my hand.

Where?

Come outside with me.

I sent again, already making my way over to the front door. I heard Mikey's phone ring as my text came through.

"Who is it?" Rye asked, a wary tone to his voice. Wary that it was Brooklyn, I knew. I clenched my fists, waiting.

"My mum. I'm gonna have to give her a ring." Mikey lied expertly, and he stood up then, stretching.
I breathed a sigh of relief.

"Is everything alright?" Andy asked, genuinely concerned.
I envisioned myself screaming in his face, as he had done to Brook, with the help of Rye, but again I decided against it.

Of course Andy would be concerned about that, and not about the fact that he had reduced Brook to tears.

"Yeah, yeah. Nothing to worry about." Mikey said nonchalantly. As he left the room he saw me in the corridor, but didn't outwardly show any signs of doing so. I opened the door, and the pair of us wordlessly left the flat, not speaking until the door had shut behind us.

"Talk."
I crossed my arms over my chest, stood a few metres from him, eyeing him up.

And man did he look guilty. I almost felt sorry for him.

"I didn't try to stop them."

Mikey stared at the floor, biting his nail.

"Why didn't you? Brook thinks you all hate him." I said.
