Andy

Wednesday night, and I was late for my shift at the shop. I cursed as I checked the time on my phone; there was no way I was going to be able to reach it on time going the normal route.

Luckily for me, I knew there was a shortcut that cut out ten minutes of the walk. I'd still be late, but I wouldn't be as late as I would've been had I taken the longer route.

I bolted down the smaller side street, ignoring the few questioning glances I received from lingering smokers outside bars and restaurants. All of them wrapped in long, black coats, gloves covering the exposed skin of their hands.

A jet of steam left my mouth as I heavily puffed, taking deep breaths, the air seemingly freezing my lungs.

It was only getting colder too, I knew, and I thought in that moment that I should've worn a thicker coat.

But I looked up as someone walked towards me, clearly intent on passing right by, but we locked eyes. Bright and green, happy, full of life, vibrant.

And then they were gone.

I looked over my shoulder, recoiling slightly when I saw him looking over his shoulder at me too. A warm feeling settled in my stomach when I realised this, and I smiled; the first genuine smile for months. But that feeling burst into flames when I saw him smiling back.

He had a young face, quite rounded, but at the same time very clearly defined. Handsome. Curly blond hair. Freckles. Not short, but not overly tall.

The warmth filled my body up, the warmth I felt for this complete stranger, and I wondered if he could see it. I mean, steam must be rising from my body, right? All I had felt was the cold for months, and then suddenly I was... happy? Content?

It occurred to me that the two of us had stopped walking to fully look at each other. I wanted to speak, but the words froze in my mouth, jammed at the back of my throat.

I swallowed them down, wanting to keep walking (I was most definitely going to be late), but the warmth this stranger had rekindled in me made me think.

Within meaning to, we walked towards each other simultaneously, in sync, almost as if we had mirrored each other.

A harsh breeze blew by, and I pulled my coat tighter around my body. My heart thumped when I saw the stranger do the same. After being so cold for so long, my heart hurt. The warmth seemed to make it come alive, to make me come alive, and before I could stop myself I spoke.

"This is crazy, but are you busy right now?"

My teeth chattered. I slid my hands into my pockets, shivered. But my heart stayed warm, alive. The man smiled at me, and I felt like I wanted to spontaneously combust.

"Nothing important, no. Why?" He answered softly.

His voice was like honey, the sultry tone adding another log to the fire that burned within me. Before, the fireplace of my soul had been empty, cold, dormant.

"Go on a date with me. Just one date." I said.

I felt confident in that moment, positive that he had felt it too. The warmth. It seemed to spread from him to me, and from me to him.

"Sure." The man said, smile widening.

This could be a mistake, I knew, but I trusted my instincts. And they told me to not let this man go.

He held a hand out. "Brooklyn." He said.

"Andy."

I took his hand, squeezed it tightly. I didn't want to let go. The moment out skin had connected the fire roared, burned behind my eyes, in my heart, coursed through my veins. Flushed out the cold, the damp, and the cobwebs.

"Where do you want to go?" Brooklyn asked as we headed in a completely different direction to our original destination.

"I don't care, but as long as I'm with you."

I wasn't used to this, but screw it.

And screw work. I never liked that job anyways.
