Rye

Andy and I had been together for two years, relishing in the feeling of young love, enjoying every moment as it came. To the lazy days in bed, to the late night movie marathons, to the long walks around the lake.
It was all amazing, and I couldn't believe that I had found someone like Andy to share the last two years with, and it was a bonus to be in the same band as he was.

But lately... it felt like the dynamic had changed between us, and I didn't know what it was. I wanted to talk to Andy about it, but I was scared that I was wrong.
Yet I think I was even more terrified of the fact that we could potentially be dragging the boat ashore. I couldn't help but think that if we didn't end it now, then it will end horribly.
And I didn't want that for Andy. It would be unfair on him, and unfair on me too.

We were curled up on the sofa watching something on my laptop - I can't even remember what the hell it was - but we were enjoying each other's company, as we always did. We didn't speak, but we didn't need to.

But after an hour or so of silence I felt an urge to speak.

"Do you want a cup of tea Fovvs?" I asked softly, lifting my head from his and looking into his eyes as he turned to face me. He had a smile on his face, nodding.

"Thanks Rye." He whispered, but I froze.
For in that smile was sadness and uncertainty, two emotions that I knew all too well. I knew in that moment that I'd have to talk to him that day.

"No problem." I kissed his forehead and made my way into the kitchen, already missing his warmth; but not as much as I used to.
I sighed heavily when I flicked the kettle on, my heart sinking lower and lower into my chest.

It only took a few minutes to make the tea, but in those few minutes I began to run a script through in my head of what the hell I was going to say to my boyfriend.

Andy sat up when I walked over with two mugs, taking his before I burned my hand any more than I had done. He laughed softly, blew on his tea, took a few small sips.

I did the same, until I felt the silence crush me. I spoke up finally, all the while feeling my heart beating out of my chest.

"This isn't working."

"What isn't working?"

"Us." I said softly, shutting my eyes.

There was a pause, I remember, in which I wondered if I'd messed up. If I'd read everything wrong. But then Andy answered.

"So you felt it too?"

I exhaled deeply, feeing like I could breathe again.
I opened my eyes to look at Andy, who was staring back, face impassive. I couldn't for the life of me decode his emotions; having spent two years as his partner (three years as his friend), I thought I'd be able to understand what he was feeling.

But I couldn't.

"I did... I didn't want to say anything in case I was wrong, but... I felt that I had to tell you today. It's not fair on you if I didn't... wait, what do you mean?" I asked, confused about his reaction.
I thought he'd be angry with me. Unless he was, but he was hiding it very well.

"I felt the same way, and I was scared too." Andy admitted quietly, taking another sip of his tea.
I nodded. At least I knew he wasn't angry. If anything, I thought that he had been understanding...

"I thought that it wouldn't be fair on you if we carried this on and I'm having these doubts." I said, warming my hands with my hot cup of tea.
I took a small sip and swallowed.

"I get that... I was literally having that thought this morning." Andy chuckled nervously, and I couldn't stop myself from laughing.

"You were? Wow, we're clever." I exclaimed.
