Jack

'Jack?'

Brook's voice through the phone sounds distorted, but I can see him smiling softly at me. I get lost in his eyes for a bit, just taking my friend in.

'Jack?' he asks again. I snap out of it, blush a little. Brook laughs at me quietly when I yawn.

'You look tired love, you don't need to stay up for me. As much as I appreciate it, but... you need your sleep,' he whispers as I wipe the sleep from my eyes, 'it's what, two in the morning for you?'

'Nah, I don't mind. Can't sleep anyway,' I say quietly.

I settle back into my covers a little, and see Brooklyn do the same.

Only on his screen it's daylight. If I look out my window, all I'll see is the moon, and darkness.

'Anything I can help with?'

I shake my head. 'No. I'm just not really that tired,' I say.

'Okay love,' he smiles.

We lay in silence for a while, and before long my hand starts to grow tired from holding up my phone. I switch hands and lay on my other side, pull the blanket up to my chin.

My glow-in-the-dark-stars light up my ceiling, and I zero in on the two tiny stars lost in the space that is my room. I smile a little.

'I miss you,' he says suddenly.

It melts my heart when I hear his words. They shatter the bubble of quietness around us, and my smile widens.

'I miss you too Brook. I always miss you,' I reply.

He shifts a bit, and suddenly he disappears.

'Brook? You there?' I call as loud as I dare. It's late here, and I don't want to wake anyone up.

His face reappears, and, just like each time, it makes my heart skip a beat.

'I'm right here. Did the connection drop?' he asks.

I nod tiredly, but know that I won't fall asleep. It's become a kind of habit, I guess.

'Love... you can sleep. I don't want to keep you up,' he tries again.

I tap my finger over the screen a little, make him giggle. 'You're not keeping me up, I promise.'

We fall into silence again, and without warning my head slips a little on the pillow; I wake up properly when my phone slips from my hand.

I know Brooklyn's smiling softly at me. He does that a lot.

'Tell me about the day we finally meet,' he says to me, as a way of keeping me awake.

It perks me up a little, but I stay curled up.

'I'd cry, of course. Wouldn't sleep for days before. Not even on the plane as I'm flying to you. I'd probably trip over my luggage, so the first time you see me, I'll be a heap on the floor,' I stop when I hear Brooklyn's laugh, the sound, the cadence of it, washing into my soul.

It's the most beautiful sound I've ever heard, and I can't wait to hear it in real life.

'Sounds like you Jackie,' he whispers. I smile. Brook's adorable.

We talk about meeting all the time, and how on that first day we'll just cuddle and sleep and listen to music and watch videos of literally anything. I love that about us, about how we both know exactly what's going to happen.
