"Fovvs? Do you, I mean, can you come to the shop with me?" Brooklyn asked quietly.
I turned my head towards him, taking in his nervous facial expression, how he played with his hands while he waited for me to respond. So, I guess it was safe to say that I had been worried about Brook for quite some time. As of late he had been quiet, and withdrawn, and not really talking to anyone for long periods of time.
He spent a lot of time by himself, or secluding himself by putting his headphones on; the message was clear to the rest of us boys that Brook wanted to be left alone.
But this was the first time he had asked someone to go out with him in weeks, and I wasn't going to pass that up.And, another reason, I could also tell that he wanted to talk to me about something. I could tell that from the way he worried his bottom lip with his teeth, the way his hand seemed to shake. And also the shakiness to his voice.
Which then reminded me that I had yet to respond to him.
"Yeah, let's go then." I leapt from the sofa, stepping into the first pair of shoes I could find, phone and jacket in hand. We left quickly, shouting a quick goodbye to whoever was left in the flat.
Neither one of us spoke, yet I could almost hear Brook screaming at himself to talk. I stayed silent though, knowing that it was Brook that needed to do this. He had to be the first to speak, other wise he would be annoyed with himself.
"Can I tell you something?" Brook abruptly said, well... He almost shouted it actually. I didn't judge him for it, because I knew all to well how hard it was to get that first word, that first sentence, out in the open, how daunting it was. I just smiled at my feet, not caring one bit that the pair of us weren't heading for the shop at all.
"Yeah, yeah of course. Always." I promised him, loud enough that he could hear me clearly over the sound of the few cars that travelled down the streets.
He didn't say anything for another minute or so, in which I watched him out of my peripheral vision. His eyes narrowed as they stared at the floor, concentrating very hard on something, or on what to say... Brook was getting antsy, and as much as I wanted to laugh, I didn't. Because I didn't want him to think I didn't care. I did care, he was one of my best friends.
"Just start talking whenever you're ready. I'm not judging, and I think you know that Brook." I reassured, making sure that he knew I wasn't going to hurry him in any way. This was already the longest amount of time I'd spent with him for a week, a new record.
"I think I'm... That I'm... Oh why is this so hard to say?"
Brooklyn questioned with an ounce of desperation, and when I turned to look at him properly, really look at him, I saw tears in his eyes. Tears of frustration, and I held my hand out to stop him from walking any farther. He sighed heavily, a shaking hand running through his hair.
"Take your time. There's no rush."
I made sure he was looking right at me as I said that, satisfied when he nodded a few times.
"C'mon Brook, lets go somewhere a bit quieter."
I gently dragged him along with me, down some back alleys, until we emerged into a tiny park that I had never realised existed until now. In it was a tiny jungle gym, one that I immediately made a beeline for, not caring that it was meant for young children. Brook and myself climbed up, perching on the wood, our legs dangling over the side.
