Sonny
You know that feeling in a dream, when you're falling, falling, falling, and your breath hitches the closer you get to the ground? You can see it coming, rising up to meet you. Fast. It's coming fast, yet somehow, despite the fear and the panic, all you can feel is the rush of it. The adrenaline from falling. The acceptance of knowing that you're going to hit the ground, hard, but at the same time it excites you? Because you want to hit the ground. You're excited to hit the ground, because you know that you never will. You'll wake up just before you hit it, breathing hard. Heart thumping. Still pumping the adrenaline around your body. Yeah, that feeling?
That's how I feel every time I see Andy Fowler.
I forget how short he is, and smile into his hair when he jumps into my arms, legs around my waist. His hands clutch my t-shirt, and all I can do is breathe in. I'm completely paralysed by the reality I'm living in right now... I get to see Andy every day for a few weeks; maybe even forever if I do well in the trial.
Despite being together for five years, we rarely see each other. A hardship we accept, although it doesn't make it any easier.
'Ryan... I can't believe this is happening,' Andy says into my shoulder. Squeezes me tighter. I feel like I'm falling.
'I thought I'd never have this chance again Andy... I thought music was over for me,' I say, through tears.
I swallow the lump in my throat, and slide my hands under his thighs when he starts to slip. I boost him up, and his arms around my neck tighten, and he starts to shake. I feel like I'm re-entering the atmosphere.
'Andy don't cry, please don't cry,' I mumble, although what I'm saying is futile, and kind of ironic; I'm crying too. I'm shaking and trembling, and my whole body rattles with the intensity.
Crying that Andy is in my arms. Crying that I'm at the beginning of a new journey. Crying that I've got a second chance, a lifeline. A new line of orbit.
And this time I'm not going to waste it. Not again.
I walk a few steps, sensing that I need to a move around a little, but neither me nor Andy make a move to let the other go.
'I don't want to let you go... I'm scared I'm dreaming and that you'll be gone when I wake up,' Andy says. His voice trembles, and I run my thumb on the underside of his leg.
I can hear voices around us, and people milling about... I assume it's my family, and the other boys talking and introducing each other. Thankfully, they've given us this time to ourselves; it's the first time we've been with each other for five months, and I think they're respecting that.
'I can assure, the feeling's mutual,' I whisper. And then he's pulling away so that he can look me directly in the eye.
Happiness. Insecurity. Wariness. Love. Affection. Relief. I stare back, and our foreheads find each other. I boost Andy back up a little, and then he kisses me. Hard. I'm falling again, and I'm dizzy.
Our lips work against each other for a while, his arms wrapping around my neck to me as close as possible. My hands clench on his legs, and my knees go weak. I stay on my feet somehow, and walk around the area a little.
I need to breathe, so I pull away, breathlessly closing my eyes and resting my head on his shoulder. He breathes heavily, and I hear him sigh as he relaxes a little on me. My body settles, but I'm still falling a little... or it's more like I've accepted the fact that I'm falling. I'm content with falling, as long as it's for Andy. Or with him.
'I missed this,' I murmur quietly.
'Me too,' Andy says.
I dance around a few more steps, spin him, and everything begins to slow down.
'We're heading off now. It's a long drive home,' I hear my mum say.
And I know I have to put Andy down.
'It's okay. I'm not going anywhere,' he says, and he makes to climb down. I let him go gently, so that he doesn't fall, and he reaches up to kiss my cheek. Eyes still red and puffy, and I can see his blush from where the boys are cooing at us.
I turn to my mum and sister, who are watching with fond smiles. We hug as three, and my mum kisses my forehead. My sister ruffles my hair.
'Have fun, alright? If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. But just have fun. That's the main thing,' my mum whispers to me.
'I know. I won't waste my time here,' I say quietly.
We separate, and they say hello to Andy, hugging him, and talking to him quietly.
And then they're in the car, honk the horn, and they're gone. I sigh and run a hand through my hair. I'm so nervous for this, but I'm also excited. Excited for the days, weeks, to come. Excited for what I'll get a chance to do.
I feel a hand on mine, and I turn with a smile to see Andy staring at me. 'Let's go inside... we can all talk in the sofa,' he says.
'Oh my God put each other down! He's only been here for five minutes!' Jack shouts from a few feet away.
I look over Andy's shoulder at the boys, beaming, and I'm falling again. Falling in the fact that Andy's here. I sling my arm around Andy and walk over to them, and greet them properly.
'It's good to see you guys again,' I say as I shake their hands, hug them briefly.
'Nah, you're just here for Andy,' Rye jokes, with a pointed smile at my boyfriend. I turn, and Andy's just staring at me with the softest smile on his face.
'Dammit, you caught me,' I whisper. The boys laugh and head inside. Andy and I don't move.
I understand that there's a possibility that I won't be staying. That I won't make it here. But they've told me themselves... they told me I deserve a chance. They told me they want me to do well.
'I'm falling like the stars ,Andy, when I'm with you,' I murmur, stroke his cheek with my thumb.
'Stars don't fall do they?' he questions, steps closer and rests his head on my chest.
I laugh and wrap my arms around him.
'You're right. They don't fall. A falling star is actually caused by tiny bits of dust and rock called meteorites. When they fall into the Earth's atmosphere, they burn up, and sometimes survive the journey to Earth,' I explain.
'Yeah?'
'I'm burning up now that I'm with you. I fell into your atmosphere, and I'm living. I'm burning. I'm on fire, Andy,' I say softly.
He's started to shake again, and I press my lips to the top of his head.
'You're such a nerd,' he sobs.
Tears roll down my own cheeks, but it doesn't damage the smile plastered on my face.
'I'm falling like the stars,' I whisper, 'falling in love.'
