Mikey

"Thanks for coming Jack." I said softly, watching the man take a seat at the table I'd picked out.

He just looked at me, not at all impressed. But I didn't blame him; I was shocked that he had agreed to meet me in the first place.

He looked different, but the same. Well-kept. Care-free. His eyes were serious, not soft as I once knew them to be. I bit my lip.

That was all my fault.

"What do you want Mike?" Jack said quietly, shaking his head; I wasn't quite sure what he was shaking his head at.

"To talk."

"So why the hell didn't you talk to me all those months ago, huh? Why now?"

He was angry... I didn't think he would be so angry. But I couldn't blame him. He had every right to be angry at me.

I guess that was another example of me not thinking properly.

"Honestly... I don't know Jack." I tapped my fingers on the table.

"You didn't call. Not once. You just left me there looking like a moron... do you know what that felt like?" He hissed, eyes blazing. I knew exactly what he was talking about...

"Hey!" Jack called softly as I approached him. I took him in my arms and hugged him tight, my smile splitting my face in two.

"You look good." I whispered into his ear, before pulling away. I kissed his cheek, but kept my arms locked around his waist, staring into his eyes. Soft and warm.

"So do you... Shall we go in?" He played with my tie, and I laughed.

"Yeah, come on." We walked into the restaurant arm in arm, sitting down at our table that we'd booked for the evening.

We talked about mindless subjects, there never once being a lull in the conversation.

But a lull came five minutes before the food came out.

We stopped talking and just looked at each other. I smiled softly, not over how much I liked the man in front of me. He smiled back, taking my hand across the table. He squeezed, and I squeezed back.

"Thanks for coming out with me Mikey." He said.

"I'm glad to... I've been looking forward to it Jack." I replied.

It was true, I hadn't seen my boyfriend for about a week, our work days clashing more than ever as Christmas grew closer.

"Also, I uh. I have something to ask you." He laughed to himself, the smile widening. I chuckled gently.

"Yeah?" I asked playfully.

"I was wondering... would you want to, move, in with me?"

His eyes were bright and excited. I stared in shock.

A waiter turned up with a bunch of red roses, handing them over to me with a smile. I nodded my thanks, not trusting myself to speak.

Jack wanted us to move in with each other?

I couldn't speak.

I looked from the roses to Jack, his expectant, nervous smile. I breathed harshly.

"Mike?" He asked, rising to his feet slowly.

I tore my hand from his and I ran. I ran from the restaurant, roses in hand. I threw them to floor when I met the cold air, and took off down the street.
