My mind ran with a million thoughts as I paced back and forth in front of the locker room. Everyone had left except for Jordan. Some of the guys left the locker room with the golden ticket they worked so hard for. Those that didn't, walked out with solemn faces, clearly devastated they weren't going to play 7-on-7 tomorrow.
Today was one of the biggest days for the guys. College recruiters were scouting players to play for their teams once they graduated and would offer scholarships to only a few of them. It was expected to see everyone give and play their best. I saw that with Spencer. I saw that with Asher. Yet, something was holding Jordan back. I couldn't figure out why, but a part of me wanted to know why. Why wasn't he playing to his full potential? What is clouding his mind?
"Hey," Jordan broke my train of thoughts. I stopped in my tracks and turned around to see him standing in front of the locker door room, looking devastated.
Did he not get the ticket to play tomorrow? I thought to myself.
"What are you doing here?" He asked. "Asher isn't here."
"Umm," I fidgeted my fingers, "I'm actually waiting for you."
"You are?" He asked surprised.
"Is that okay?" Jordan nodded. I took a step closer to him. "Can we go somewhere and talk?"
"Sure. I know just the place," Jordan said.
He led the way to the football field. There wasn't a tension between us before, but as we walked in silence, there was one and it grew with each step. I couldn't tell why there was one, but there was, and it annoyed the hell out of me. I don't want anything to be weird or awkward between us.
I asked Jordan to leave after he showed up to my door step to apologize last night. I didn't want him to know Asher was staying at my house. It wasn't my secret to tell, but at the same time, I didn't want him to know. I didn't want him to know Asher and I are somewhat playing house, sharing a bed together and have been cuddling every night since Asher was upset over finding out Lelia didn't love him back and is now with Spencer.
As we walked towards the bleachers, Asher and Olivia were walking off the field. We all gave each other weird looks. I was wondering what Asher and Olivia are doing together. I had no doubt Jordan was questioning the same thing and it was obvious they were thinking the same thing about me and Jordan. We didn't say anything. We didn't ask any questions. Instead, we continued to walk away from one another.
Jordan led to the top of the bleachers and sat down in silence. He didn't say anything or signal me to join him, but I sat next to him anyways. We looked towards the field and the sun was slowly starting to set. With the sun hitting certain spots and shadows casting over certain places, the field looked beautiful, somehow magical as if this is a place where dreams come true. In a sense they do. Boys, like Asher, Jordan, and Spencer, play hard to achieve their dreams of playing college or pro football.
"Wow," I whispered. "I can see why you like playing football."
"It has its moments."
Jordan's tone was off. He didn't sound happy or sounded like he loved the game.
"What happened on that field earlier, Jordan?" I asked, immediately jumping into the conversation I wanted to have with him.
