Y/N sat at the back of the classroom, doodling on her notebook as she waited for class to start. She colored in a heart with her black pen and looked up when she heard a familiar voice. It was obvious something was bothering Asher. He didn't look too happy, but he wasn't mad either. She thought maybe he was annoyed about something. She quickly looked back down at her notebook as Asher and JJ got closer and eavesdropped on their conversation.
"Hey, sorry I slept through gym," JJ said as the final bell rang. Asher gave him a look, one that made JJ continue to explain his absence at practice. "Hey, Julie and I snuck out last night, had our own workout with some college chicks."
Y/ N's face scrunched up in disgust.
"Yo, come on, man. Ever since we won State, you and Jordan have been partying and half-assing practices," Asher said as he sat down on the desk in front of Y/N. He was too annoyed with JJ to notice her there. On any other given day, he would spot her in a heartbeat, but he was too frustrated with his teammates at the moment.
She didn't look up, but she could see from the corner of her eye, he hadn't noticed her. It made her heart sink a little bit. She started to draw a small broken heart as she continued to listen.
"'Half-assing' is a little aggressive, bro," JJ said.
"Whatever, man. Just bring it to practice today," Asher replied.
"Oh, Coach Davis said today is, uh, optional."
'It doesn't hurt to show up before the scrimmage', Y/N thought to herself as if she was a part of the conversation.
"Our first scrimmage is tomorrow. When did you stop caring about football, man?"
Y/N didn't need to see the worry on Asher's face as it was evident in his tone. It seemed like he's the only one who cares and all the other guys think it's okay to cruise by because they have a championship under the belt. Winning a State Championship doesn't mean they shouldn't work as hard or stop focusing on the game anymore. If anything, they should want to work harder and defend their title.
"Oh, chill," JJ brushed off Asher's question. "I mean even Coach Baker is on vacation.
Y/N finally looked up and noticed Asher was about to say something.
"Sorry, I'm late," the teacher rushed in, preventing Asher from saying what he wanted to say next. He let out a small frustrated sigh.
Without thinking about it and as if her muscles had a mind of their own, Y/N reached for his shoulder. Asher looked back and looked a bit surprised. He wasn't expecting her to be there, let alone feeling her soft and gentle touch burn through the fabric of his shirt.
"Hey, you okay?" She whispered.
Y/N wanted to be there for him, console him in any way possible. She hoped she would have the chance to talk to him today. Unfortunately, it wasn't at the moment as the teacher started the lecture.
Asher gave her a wary smile. His eyes flickered down to her notebook and noticed the small black heart and a broken heart next to it. Nothing about that seemed happy or good.
His eyebrows pulled together. Had he been too caught up with his own problems he didn't seem to notice maybe she was going through something? Heartbreak? If so, who was it? He didn't even realize she was interested in someone.
He grabbed her pen and drew something. He handed back her pen. "We'll talk later," he whispered before turning around to focus on today's lecture.
She looked down and saw what he drew, a smiley face with its tongue sticking out. The small gesture put a smile on her face.
