Chicago Walp had been admitted into Los Angeles hospital after a serious car accident. The accident was so bad that he fell into a coma. It had been three months since the accident and his girlfriend, Chloe Beale, visited him every day and spoke to him. Chloe grew more and more concerned as the days went on. She tried to hold out hope but it was difficult. His vitals hadn't changed so he was just lying there in the hospital bed. It broke Chloe's heart to see him that way. She just wanted him to wake up. She loved Chicago. She was going to have a future with him. Even though he was in the US Army, she knew that he would always return to her and he did. He had just gotten back from Iraq and was on leave for six months before he had to go back but he was talking to Chloe about not going back since they were thinking about settling down.
However, those plans were put on hold when Chicago got into a car accident. He was driving along the highway on a rainy night when someone pulled out into the intersection without seeing Chicago's car. By the time Chicago saw the car pull out, it was too late for his breaks to save him. The two cars collided and that was it. The other person had only suffered a few fractured ribs and other minor injuries whereas Chicago fell straight into a coma. The news broke Chloe's heart and what made it even worse for her was knowing that she couldn't do anything other than wait. Chloe tried her best not to get too upset about the matter. She spoke to him every day to keep his brain stimulated and bring him some comfort if he could hear her. Chloe would also sing to Chicago since he loved Chloe's voice.
Chloe was at the hospital again and she had spent the afternoon telling him about her day, reading to him, and watching TV with him. It became exhausting after a while but Chloe wasn't going to give up. Chloe was never a quitter and she certainly wasn't going to give up on him no matter how hard times were.
"Wake up, my love... Please..." Chloe begged, gently stroking Chicago's arm.
Chloe waited for a response but she got nothing. She then laced her fingers with his and began to sing softly. Singing also brought Chloe some comfort as it always did. Whenever Chloe got scared, nervous, or even angry, she would sing and it would calm her down. So her singing to Chicago did both of them favours.
Chloe got lost in her singing as she always did but she jumped when she saw someone standing in the doorway of Chicago's room.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you," the woman said.
"That's... that's okay," Chloe breathed, feeling her heart race in her chest from the fright.
"You have a beautiful voice."
"Oh, thank you." Chloe let go of Chicago's hand then looked up at the woman. "Wait... are you... Beca Mitchell? The music producer?"
"I am," she smiled.
"Oh... Oh my God! Hi! I'm a big fan!" Chloe stood and stepped over to Beca to shake her hand.
"Thank you." Beca shook Chloe's hand briefly before releasing it. "I'm sorry for intruding but I couldn't help but hear your voice. I'm in the room next door. Well, not me specifically but my friend. She's recovering from a car accident."
"A... a car accident?"
"Yeah."
"Wait... she's the one who hit Chicago?"
"Y, yeah... How did you know?"
"Because this is Chicago," Chloe said, pointing to the man in the bed. "He's my boyfriend."
"Oh... Wow. They put the two patients next to each other?"
"It looks like it. Is your friend okay?"
