"Hi, mama."
Beca's blood went cold at the sight. There before her on The Voice Kids USA was her eight-year-old daughter Valerie Mitchell. The girl she had never met before in her life. The daughter she left when Chloe was six months pregnant with her. All of the judges turned around for the girl, Beca being the first and she knew that she was her daughter before Valerie told her. The girl had Chloe's bright, blue eyes and Beca's chocolate brown hair. She looked a lot like Chloe and a lot like Beca. She was the perfect blend of both of her parents. Valerie chose Beca to be her mentor and Beca hugged the girl, asking to see her backstage immediately.
"Valerie..." Beca uttered, mesmerised by her daughter.
"Why did you leave?"
Beca wasn't expecting the question to be asked so soon.
"I... I..." Beca had trouble speaking, which was a first. "Where's your mom?"
"She doesn't know I'm here."
"What?"
"I knew she wouldn't let me audition so I did it myself."
"How did you get here?"
"Auntie Aubrey took me."
Beca's blood drained from her face, making her as white as a ghost. Aubrey was there. Beca never really got along with Aubrey and she knew the blonde was out to get her after Beca left Chloe. Beca Mitchell wasn't scared of a lot of things but an angry and vengeful Aubrey Posen was one of them. She was probably on the top of the list.
"Aubrey's here?"
"Yes," Valerie nodded.
"Shit,"
"Why did you leave mommy?" She asked again.
Beca looked into her daughter's eyes and melted. She had never met the girl before but she loved her. She was her daughter - her own flesh and blood.
"Does mommy talk about me a lot?"
"Not really. She doesn't like to but I ask sometimes. She said that you left when she was pregnant with me."
"Did she tell you why?"
"She said that you were selfish and didn't love her."
"No, that's... that's not true."
"Then why did you leave?"
Beca sighed and raked a hand through her hair. "Mommy and I were young when we decided to have you. We just got married and went on to have a baby but I was close to getting my big break with my music career. I was focused on that but... your mommy thought that was too much so we separated."
"Separated?"
"She didn't understand how close I was to getting my big break but she wanted more from me. I explained how difficult things were but it wasn't enough for her so we ended things."
"But why did you leave me?"
Beca's heart broke at the question.
"Valerie..." Beca got on her knees before her daughter and took her hands. "I wanted to see you. I wanted to be there for you but your mommy wouldn't let me."
"Why?"
"It's... complicated but you need to trust me on that. Not a day went by where I didn't think of you. I tried to get in contact with mommy but she made it so hard and she told me to leave you and her alone."
