edit 2: updated the red lightsaber history...so y/n's natural kyber crystal turned red when he claimed it.

The mess hall was filled with the sound of laughter and chatter. Ahsoka's youngling Clan, the Raxshir Clan, were contently conversing and eating. They had just finished a lesson of lightsaber combat, whilst y/n and herself had been specially chosen by Master Yoda to help teach the younger initiates.

A rotated diet of polystarch bread with veg-meat, energy supply bars, bland calorie balls, ration block chips, and other uninviting foods was all Ahsoka had tasted ever since she joined the Order. She wasn't looking forward to eating.

"Are you guys excited for the Crystal Caves of Ilum?" one of their companions asked once y/n and Ahsoka finally chose their equally tasteless meals and had seated themselves at the bench. Nervous, excited or worried whispers passed around the table as each member thought about the trial ahead.

The Crystal Caves of Ilum formed a cornerstone of the Jedi Initiate Trials, and the Raxshir Clan would journey to the icy planet in two days. The younglings would travel off-world to the distant world of Ilum, discovering themselves on an expedition to find their kyber crystal. Then, they would create their very own lightsaber.

Before, younglings used the provided training lightsabers, or sometimes wooden swords. Now, they had the chance to build their own.

y/n had heard all about this adventure. Despite having manufactured his own lightsaber already, he had never travelled to Ilum before.

When he was eight, just before he joined the Jedi Order, he had been under the guidance of another mentor adept in the Force. He was meant to seek out his own crystal, but instead, he felt an undeniable pull toward the two unclaimed kybers his mentor kept in a large, woven brown bag.

In y/n's hand, those previously uncoloured crystals had assumed a bright shade of scarlet, and he had constructed his own weapon in the similar make as one of his 'predecessors'.

It had been a huge feat for him, and y/n regarded his lightsaber, hanging off his belt, with pride and satisfaction.

He was grateful that the Jedi Council had been tolerant enough to offer him the opportunity to do the same as the other students. However, he knew the real reason was that they hoped he would claim another kyber crystal, this one of a more standard colour.

The Order had always been skeptical of the origins of his red crystals; in their eyes, it was unnatural. And of course, it raised the question of how and why kyber crystals had landed in the hands of a non-Jedi.

y/n tried not to think about it.
