"Watch the way you caress me
because your fingerprints
seep beneath my skin
& run madly through my veins,
directly into my heart."

"Hey, what time should I tell my parents to expect you?" Daphne asked Eduardo over the phone just a half-hour before he was off work

"Hey, what time should I tell my parents to expect you?" Daphne asked Eduardo over the phone just a half-hour before he was off work.

"Wait, what? I never said I would." He took a brief moment to rack his brain and try to remember if he had.

"You didn't say you wouldn't, either."

"Daphne, I can't."

"But I already told my mom you'd be here. She's cooking especially for you." It wasn't a lie. As soon as she got home from school, she asked her mom to make that chicken she had mentioned to him and helped her do the grocery shopping.

As much as he hated the guilt trip, he knew it wasn't his fault since he had never agreed to it in the first place. "I'm sorry. I just made other plans."

"What could be so important that you have to bail on my mom's dinner?"

"I..." he hesitated, only because he didn't want to sound like he was happy to throw it in her face. "I'm meeting Annie after work."

Her jaw tightened as earlier's flirtatious banter came to mind. She breathed out deeply and tried to keep her voice placid. "Please? It's just dinner. It won't take all night."

He gave it a moment's thought and decided it wouldn't be a bad idea to get some food in his stomach before diving into a study session of slopes and linear inequalities.

"My parents miss you," she added during his silence. "They were looking forward to seeing you again."

He was certain that part wasn't true but it also made him acknowledge he didn't want to be that guy that knocked up their daughter and then never showed up again. "Fine. I'll go there straight from here."

Daphne almost yelped in excitement. Though her goal to have the house to themselves would have to wait for another day, having him cave to dinner with her family was already a step forward.
