A few days later, as Sofia let Richard inside while everyone was at work, she noticed something was missing. "Where did you leave your car?"

"I don't have it." He ran a hand across his head, looking stressed as ever. "My parents kicked me out and they kept my fucking car keys because the title is under my dad's name, so it technically belongs to him."

Sofia grabbed his hands and pulled him down to sit with her on the sofa. "Why?"

"Because I didn't even have a license yet when we got it."

"No, baby. Why did they kick you out?"

He stared back at her, her brows knitted in concern, lips slightly pouted in compassion. Realizing he had just barged in there without even giving her a proper hello, he grabbed her face and kissed her, long enough for a fraction of his troubles to shrink in significance.

He pulled her head down to his chest, resting his chin on top of it, and hugged her. "They found a whole brick of coke in my room and flipped the fuck out."

"Shit," she breathed out, seeing his dilemma. "That's pretty bad but they can't kick you out forever, right?" She tilted her head to peer up at him.

"I really don't fucking care if it's forever. I'm just annoyed it had to be today of all days."

"What's today?"

He didn't answer right away. He only stroked her hair a few times as he debated it in his head. "Bonita... um... I hate to be that guy but, um, could I maybe spend the night here? Just for tonight. I have nowhere else to go today."

She pushed away to get a good look at him. "What do you mean? What the hell is today about?"

"I can't stay at any of the homies' cribs right now."

"Why not?"

"'Cus."

"'Cus what?"

"Just 'cus."
