"I promise when we're old,
we'll still be best friends
chasing each other around
in our motor scooters all day long."The following day at lunch, as promised, Inez told Enrique everything that had happened with the cop. Marvin heard about it too since he was there hanging out with him.
Enrique shook his head and jested, "Who ditches on a school day?"
Inez chuckled and then sighed out loud. "I felt like such a rebel! It was freaking awesome."
"You never fail to surprise me, Inez."
She smiled at him and their eyes inevitably locked into each other. This time she lasted longer than usual before breaking the contact, as she was beginning to get a little used to his oversized eyes.
Eventually, Marvin stepped away from their table to go throw out his food tray.
"Hey, do I make you uncomfortable?" Enrique suddenly asked her.
Inez decided not to lie. The last thing she wanted was to have him misinterpret her friendship for something more. "When you look at me like that, yes."
"Like how?"
"Like there's something on my face."
"Well, that's because there is something on your face, silly." He chuckled softly and ogled her with a smile. "There's a pair of beautiful brown eyes."
Inez couldn't help but smile and quickly looked down at her food tray nervously, though she could still feel his eyes on her and an annoying warmth expanding in her cheeks.
