"When you're a kid,
you fail to realize that you're also watching your mom and dad grow up."Eva wouldn't stop smiling the whole time she had dinner with both her parents and David. She loved that her parents weren't offending each other and were eating like a real family. Sharing this moment with her best friend was the cherry on top.
Her dad, Oscar, was telling them about his life in Spain when he suddenly looked to Eva and asked, "Have you thought about it yet? Going with me to Spain?"
Her eyes fell to her plate, desperately wanting to avoid Oscar's hopeful ones and David's glaring ones.
"She'd love to go visit," David answered for her. "Like a week or two, you know?"
Oscar smiled warmly at his response before shifting back to Eva. Being that she hadn't flat out said no just yet, he took her silence as a maybe. He figured she probably wasn't ready to discuss it in front of David, so he ended the topic there.
After eating, while Eva and Susana tidied up in the kitchen, Oscar made small talk and asked David about school before bringing up Spain again. "Why are you so against Eva leaving?"
David looked back at Eva who was washing dishes. She caught him looking and smiled. He smiled back and turned back to Oscar. "She's my best friend. I love her. If she left, nothing would ever be the same again."
"I'm glad you feel that way about my daughter. But what if she's happier there? Don't you want her to be happy?"
"I do. And I can assure you her happiness is right here, not there. Look, why don't you just move back instead? She's happy when you're here. What she needs is her father and she shouldn't have to move all the way to Spain to have him."
Oscar smiled and gave his shoulder a pat, letting him know he'd won the debate.
Once David left home, Oscar and Susana had Eva take a seat with them on the sofa for a talk.
Eva thought they would talk about Spain but she grinned when her dad started off by saying, "We have a surprise for you."
"What is it?" Her eyes roamed around for any sign of a gift peeking out from somewhere.
