but our brain is guilty for inviting us all to fall."While the whole drama at Daphne's house had been going on, David had climbed in through Eva's window yet again. This time, just before midnight so that he would be the very first person to start her birthday with.
As soon as the clock struck midnight and David hugged her, she rested her chin over his shoulder, fighting against the tears that wanted to pool in her eyes. Her arms wrapped him tightly, cherishing his embrace more than ever, knowing she only had a few more of his hugs to enjoy.
Spending time with him was much more difficult now that it was her last weekend there. The clock ticked louder. Obnoxiously. Her heart slumped heavily in sadness and guilt. It cracked precariously each time he would smile her way, so obliviously.
"Now, I know you're not big on fine jewelry, but I bet you'll like this." Snapping her from her woes, David held out a small rectangular box to her.
She shook her head in refusal once she registered it was a birthday gift. "I told you not to."
"But I wanted to." He grabbed her hand to force it onto her palm since she continued to reject it. "Take a damn gift, will ya?"
"David," she complained in a whisper.
"Open it," he demanded, ignoring her stubbornness.
She sighed out defeatedly and looked down to open the small box and reveal a gold locket secured to a thin gold chain.
"Keep going," David instructed when all she did was stare at it.
She was afraid to do so. More so, her heart was nervous at how much it could take before dangerously bursting. Her fingers trembled as she pressed her nail against the locket clasp to pop it open.
Her eyes surrendered, giving way to the tears she had been suppressing. The tiny picture of them two, cut out into a heart shape to fit the locket, was momentarily blurred, though she was still able to make out the simple, yet meaningful, words on the adjacent half of the heart:
