"I want to be the reason you look down at your phone and smile.
...Then walk into a pole."The week was moving too quickly for Eva's liking and for everyone that knew it was her last.
It was now Friday morning. The sun was just starting to peak out but David was already up and running a lap around the outer path of Balboa Park in a wife beater and basketball shorts.
He stopped a moment to look behind him, where Guillermo was struggling to keep up.
He and David had hung out a few more times during the week, finally overcoming that initial awkward stage, but he could tell from Guillermo's exhausted face that he was regretting signing up for this morning jog. It was an activity David had recently gotten into the habit of, figuring it would make better use of his insomnia than just laying in bed fighting it to no avail.
Once Guillermo made it to David's side, he leaned over with his hands on his knees, gasping for air. "This is too much. I can't anymore," he said through his heaves.
David chuckled, noting the large sweat stain on the front of his shirt. "We're not even halfway around the park yet."
"David, you're young and fit and it doesn't take much for you to stay that way... but look at me." He patted his protruding belly.
David nodded in understanding. "Fine. We can just walk then."
Guillermo agreed to that and straightened himself up to continue down the path.
"How'd you get so big anyway?" David asked him.
"Eh, after 30 your body starts doing weird things if you don't take care of it. But it was mostly the alcohol. It messed up my metabolism."
"Well, if you did this every morning, I bet you could get back to how you used to be."
Guillermo scoffed at the idea. "I'm not sure I'll do this again after today. I was never able to get myself into an exercise routine."
David pulled his phone out to text Eva and make sure she was waking up for school. "When did you say you're leaving?"
"Monday."
