"SUSPENDED?!" Sofia shrieked when Eduardo went to pick her up from practice later that day.
At this point, he was already used to the yelling. Jessica had done quite a lot of it when they made her leave work to go to the office and sign him out.
"It's just for a day. Relax. I'll be back after tomorrow."
Sofia stared at him the whole time, incredulous. Something like this had never happened before. Eduardo and Richard had learned to ignore each other and keep their distance so effectively over the past years, that she couldn't even begin to fathom where this sudden reborn feud was stemming from. The only thing that made sense was the one thing she did not want to hear.
"Was this about... Daphne?" She spit her name out like it was poison.
"No!" Eduardo glanced briefly at her as he drove, giving her another glimpse of his bruised cheek and his busted lip. "Not at all. Why the hell would this be about Daphne?"
"Well then what the hell was it about?!"
He breathed out a weary sigh. "It was about Richard being fucking Richard. He's been trying to provoke me lately and he finally got what he wanted today."
"But why?!"
"Why what?!"
"Why is he trying to get under your skin all of a sudden?"
"Baby, yo que se? I don't know. 'Cause that's fucking Richard for you."
She could hear the irritability growing in his voice and though she wasn't entirely convinced, she dropped it anyway.
But once they made it to his driveway, it somehow took her back to Homecoming night when Richard dropped her off and she recalled saving his number on her phone. "You know what? I'm gonna call the fucking asshole and figure out what the hell his deal is!"
Eduardo scowled as she pulled out her phone and grasped her wrist before she could even unlock the screen. "Have you been talking to him?"
Sofia looked over to meet the grudging daggers in his eyes. "No, I haven't."
